I have to disagree about taking round trip. I have taken many RR trips, including Siverton, Glacier Express, Bernina Express, St. Petersburg to Moscow, etc. Return journey is a different experience. Also, different light, perspectives, etc.
My advice would be to stay overnight and DO take the trip back.
I took a jeep trip out of Ouray up to Yankee Boy Meadows. Incredible scenery and wildflowers galore. The Yankee Boy name comes from a mine into mountains separating Ouray from Telluride. According to the trip leader, miners in Yankee Boy broke through to a transverse in a mine that started out near Telluride. He said it had been possible to go through the Yankee Boy Mine and into the other mine and on to Telluride - on foot, of course. Another great trip is to Engineer Mountain on the east side of Ouray going toward Lake County.

We are just about ready to book a trip at the begining of June on the Durango Silverton Railway. Has anyone taken this trip and how did you like it? It has been years since we were last in Colorado and looking forward to taking the camera. Just wanted to get some thoughts from others on this trip.
Thank you very much
Mike
We did the round trip on the train on our honeymoon in June 1971 and it was a great trip that is on our "to do again list." We then drove from Durango to Colorado Springs on the Million Dollar Highway (US 550) which goes past (above) Silverton, past Ouray to Montrose, then US 50 to Colorado Springs. That is an absolutely beautiful drive and I highly recommend it. If you haven't been to Colorado Springs, it is worth a visit, especially The Garden of the Gods and the Air Force Academy. Here are some photos scanned from color slides taken with a Minolta rangefinder.

Even Silverton hasn't changed much since 1971, or even 1959 when our family went there. Husband and I went in 2008 and the footprint of the town was almost the same, and the roads were still mostly gravel. I'm sure there are probably some new or remodeled buildings, but enough of the town was the same that it felt like 1959.
And the train ride and views were the same as I remembered.

We didn't take the gondola; I don't know if it was even there in 1971. I recognize your photo that is similar to mine; great view. Thanks for sharing your photos. I want to do that part of our trip again.
