flash light meter

I have the Minolta Auto Meter IF. Has a lot of features for an older meter. Will use the Yongnuo RF 603N II On camera and on flashes/ strobes to trigger and meter them wirelessly.

use the spot light meter on/in your camera, you can point it around the scene and pick the area you want... my last light meter was stolen from me in HS, 70+ years ago, when the cameras came out with the ability to get a reading inside a doorway from outside, that did it..

That's fine for ambient light but I don't think that's feasible when using flashes/strobes. Unless I'm missing something. Good point on using the camera meter though.
