Hi all,
Putting this out there in the hopes that some of you might have some thoughts.
Last summer, I suffered a partial retinal retachment resulting in decreased vision in my right eye. Fortunately it is being treated however there is still a significant loss in right-side visual acuity. I shoot with a D7200 and really isn't designed to be used with my left eye so have resorted to using Live View. However Life View is much slower and since I shoot a look of candids and animal outdoor shots, it's not the ideal solution.
I was thinking of perhaps an external 3.5" LCD screen but before I start adding even more weight and "goodies" to the camera, wanted to get some input from others.
Thanks! _ Jeff G.

You have a 3" LCD screen now, how much difference do you think another 1/2" will actually make?
Lots of people are left eye dominant and use their left eye with many different DSLRs. It may take time but getting used to using your left eye would be a better solution for sure.

I agree completely. I am left eye dominant, and use the same camera, and it's not a problem at all. With some practice I think you will be surprised at how quickly your left eye will adapt.

How bad is your vision in the right eye? There are attachments that can be put on the rear viewfinder that will enlarge and magnify the viewing area of the viewfinder. Have you seen those?

I was right eye dominant for years, till the optician remarked that my right eye was weaker, and changing more, each annual check-up. So I started to use my left eye for camera work. Took a little getting used to, like closing the left eye as I put the camera up to shoot (with the left eye). However, time passed, and left eye shooting became second nature, till..... AMD.....Age related Macular Degeneration developed in my left eye. So.………… back to using the right eye again. I am having (monthly) injections into the left eye to keep things in check. No cure just a stop-gap treatment. Persevere with your 'best' eye...probably your best bet.

I am also left eye dominant, have been all my life. I shoot left hand which can be a problem with semi automatic weapons. I have not had any problems use my left eye. The only way I can use my right eyes is to shut the left eye or cover it. I am some what ambidextrous as there a several things that I am right hand dominant in writing. As fare as tools it depends on the tool it seems. There is advantages at times but you do adjust. It just takes some time and patience's.

Hi all - Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the left eye suggestions you've provided and let you know how it turns out.

Another endorsement for switching eyes as a solution. I had to do it due to a corneal scratch a number of years ago, and I was surprised how quickly I was able to adapt. When the scratch had healed, I returned to right eye use, but I'm now officially ambivisionous (???) and can switch at will. My brain is not usually very good at "handedness" things - when I have a temporary disability of hand or foot, the simplest tasks become difficult.

Yes, just try using the left eye, it may take a while to get used to it.
I am right handed (well partly ambidextrous) and left eye dominant and sometime use either eye, you just have to get used to it. (In the Army I would freak out the range masters by flipping my rifle over from shooting right handed to left handed then back to right handed during a long string of shots.)

For most using their "other" eye the main "wrong" feeling is how your nose touches the back of the camera - try one of those little extenders with a rubber eye cup and magnifier inserts. It lets you keep your nose from being mashed into the back of the camera and the soft eye cup keeps out stray light so you see the image better.

AmbiOcular?

Better than AmbiSinistrous (two left hands).

Thanks. I do have an eye cup although I rarely use it. Guess I have to dig it out of my bag and see how it works.

I'm sure it's a matter of giving yourself time to adjust to using your left eye. I'm left eye dominate and have been using that eye with many different cameras for over 60 years. Be patient it will work out for you.

An eye cup....is that something you wear in athletics in case you get hit with a ball taking a bad bounce?

I'm not familiar with your camera, but most advanced Digital Cameras today have an extensive ability to reassign functions from various camera buttons to others. Perhaps this facility might make your adjustment to using your left eye for the viewfinder.
When I experienced a major cataract in my dominant right eye, I had to make adjustments, including using Back Button Focus on a two generations old EOS 50D to help me adjust until I got my surgery.
