Nikons let you set the upper limit of the ISO. Otherwise, it can go higher than you might want. Still, if you want to get the shot, a very high ISO might be your only option.

I just have my camera on "auto" If there is no time to set things up I get a well exposed picture most of the time. The famous press photographer Wee Gee set his speed graphics at f/16, 1/200 10'. #5 press flash. He was also said to say f/8 and be there. - Dave

Basic settings for a camera includes the following:
1. Focusing. You have to focus on what you want sharpest in the image.
2. Aperture. This controls the amount of light transmit by the lens and the depth of field.
3. Shutter speed. This controls the duration of the exposure and also has an effect on subject or camera movement.
4. ISO. This basically set the sensitivity of the sensor (not exactly true but for now we can just assume that).

Those are the basic settings.

In program mode with auto-ISO and the AF point (or zone) set in the middle, the camera is in a 'general' configuration for grab and go.

Don't have a D5300, but have a few other Nikon DX and FX bodies. In P mode, the camera selects Aperture and Shutter Speed and ISO is pre-selected by the photographer. If you go into the menu and select the camera you can scroll down to ISO Sensitivity Settings. You can set a base ISO sensitivity then either disable or enable Auto ISO and a Maximum Sensitivity. When ISO is in auto, the camera will select an ISO within the selected range. If auto is off, then the base ISO will be used. If the camera cannot find an Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO for the shot, you should see some things blinking at you in the viewfinder.

I also have a D5300. I don't use P mode much anymore. Have moved to M (Manual) mode with Auto ISO. I set the shutter speed based on my ability to hold the camera steady (depends on lens focal length) or possible subject movement. I try to set aperture near the middle of the range to get best lens image quality, but will change it based on depth of field considerations.

I personally would not use Auto ISO with P mode, simply because I don't know how my camera, with that configuration, adjusts the variable settings to changing light conditions. If you do set Auto ISO, remember that you can override the ISO selected by the camera by using Exposure Compensation (EC) settings to increase or decrease the exposure.

I currently shoot RAW + JPEG but may drop the JPEG somewhere along the line. I use Auto White Balance. The HDR setting is off, you can't use it if you have your camera set to shoot RAW.

Some time ago I asked a question similar to yours. You might find some useful advice in the answers.

Go for it, switch the dial to "M" and learn about Basic Daylight Exposure, or Sunny 16. The att chart is for Kodacolor II, which was ASA 80, today's ISO 100. Start from there, and remember pixels are free.

Reread your manual. Usually the first part of the book explains these settings. You can also google it, there are many Utube videos on the net that will explain exactly what you need.

Check your manual for custom settings. In Olympus, you can define basic parameters for up 4 custom programs which can be recalled at any time. I have number 1 set up with my basic grab and go. I do not know if this is available on you camera but it's worth checking. I do not know of any camera that lets you alter the P settings.
