Was about to upgrade my firmware for my Nikon D - 5300.
Then I read that a person that did it had caused his lens not to work on his camera.
I contacted Nikon, they said …
"we do not guarantee the use of 3rd party lens's on their cameras".
Since I am using a Sigma lens, I now have concern's of upgrading my firmware.
Sooo, what is your opinion on this ??
Has anyone else had this happen ??
Please advise.

Lars

Why do you want to update the firmware? Firmware can enable new capabilities or fix specific problems, documented in the release notes. If you don't have such a problem or do not need the feature that is enabled, there's no need to install the firmware update. Given some updates cause problems with third-party lenses and / or batteries, you should be particularly careful in your investigation and evaluation of making this firmware update. You cannot undo the update.

Yes, that is becoming a trend. From what I recall, this was a problem a few months ago. Then, something changed. Either Nikon or the lens maker made a change so the lens would work. If Nikon doesn't make the lens, you can't expect them to guarantee that it will work. Still, I bet they know how to disable third party lenses through their software. Does the firmware upgrade offer anything you really want or need?

I'd check with Sigma.

The current firmware version for your camera is from June of last year, so it's not brand new. Why not contact the manufacturer of the lens and see what they have to say about that version of firmware and your lens. Also, I believe that the firmware upgrade gives you the option of backing up your current firmware version before installing the new one. If so, then you should be able to revert back if needed. There is also a distortion control update that you will probably want to install for better performance with various lenses.

To me the top priority is always, that my camera is up to spec., if that would make a lens not performing correctly, so be it, I would take care of that next, but I never had any issues of any kind with firmware updates!

I had this happen to me last year when I downloaded an update for my Nikon D800 camera. After the firmware update my 35mm Sigma 1.4 Art Lens would not autofocus. I contacted Sigma and they suggested two options : they would update the lens for a small fee or buy the Sigma docking station to update the lens software myself. I decided to buy the docking station and now the lens has full autofocus function again.

Some updates are needless, call Nikon again and ask them what the update is for. Usually it is for something trivial that will not effect most of the settings.

updated my olympus. the update made some really significance in performance. If there are no real performance improvements to be had, best to leave well enough alone. Can't undo updates, and not all updates are needed by everyone.

Most Nikon firmware updates will render auto focus inoperable for some 3rd party lenses. It often happens with Sigma lenses. If you do the firmware update using the SD card you can rollback the firmware to the previous version the same way. As an example if you upgrade from version 1.02 to 1.03 and your lens stops working the way it used to simply "upgrade" back to 1.02. There are plenty of sites where you can find older firmware versions to download. Perform the "upgrade" to 1.02 and you're back to where you were. The camera doesn't know 1.02 isn't truly an upgrade. After experiencing auto focus issues due to an upgrade I by practice download the current version of firmware so I have a copy which frees me up to perform future upgrades and be able to roll back the version without fear of not being able to find the older version.

Not being to undo the update .... is that unique to Nikon? I keep copies of firmware update files for my Canon 7d2 and 6d (when I owned it) just in case, and have on occasion just run the old version over the new and the version rolled back without a problem.

It is like updating the BIOS on a computer. Don't do if you are not having problems.
