My Shutter release issue

I was out shooting here in Florida yesterday and all of a sudden, when I depressed the Shutter buttion, nothing happened! Tried a few times, nothing. Went back to my car, sat down and aimed at the dashboard, and Click, the Shutter button worked and captured my Dashboard! Checked all my settings and I am at a loss why my shutter button did not work properly,..then it did work.
Does anyone here have a suggestion as to what might be going on with my Nikon D3300 Camera? Is it just a setting adjustment I must make or a serious issue with my camera?
So, right now I am confused, will it again happen at a very important time and totally frustrate me as to what is causing this Shutter issue. I am a beginner, about 3 years now, still learning and will appreciate any assistance here at UHH.
Oh, first thing I checked was my Battery, it was at full power.

I have a D3200 and have noticed that if the focus area is not well defined, it will not focus automatically. As an example trying to focus on a grey scale card on auto probably will not work.

I’d suggest going back out and trying to recreate the issue. In the view finder, look for anything blinking, an indication that some setting is out of tolerance. In other words, you’re asking the camera to do something it can’t do. I’m not a Nikon shooter so I’m hesitant to talk specifics. But... your manual should address what happens if too close to the subject or how that camera will react under certain circumstances. When it happens to me, I’ll usually immediately relax a setting or go to another mode like Auto or Program and try again. If it works, I know it’s me. Not to worry, all is not lost. Good luck.

I do not know on the D3300, but on my Nikons, there is a setting that will not allow a shutter release if focus is not acquired. I do not remember where that setting is, but you may want to google it and set it where you do not need to have focus acquired for the shutter to release.

The camera may not have been able to focus. This happens occasionally with my D3300.

I believe you may have a menu setting where you choose between allowing the shutter to fire, or blocking it, when the camera is not in focus. Check that out.

My shutter button often fails. It seems to take bad photos much to often. Is there a setting that could prevent these failures? ( sorry. Just couldn't help my self)

Custom Setting Menu - Autofocus - AF-C priority selection
Release: "the shutter can be released even when the camera is not in focus"
Focus: "the shutter can only be released when the camera is in focus"

Does the D3300 allow for choosing when the shutter activates?
Look in your camera menu under Custom Settings > a-Autofocus > a1 AF-C priority selection and a2 AF-S priority selection to choose the condition when the shutter activates. With Focus the shutter will activate only when the subject is in focus, with Release the shutter will activate whenever the button is pushed.

I downloaded the D3300 manual from the NikonUsa website and found that
the 'Focus' section describes all the focus settings, pg 74-84. I would recommend
you read these pages while checking your settings on your camera, might help
resolve the issue you are having. Good Luck

Sometimes, if the camera cannot find a clear edge, focus could refuse to work. Shoot some stuff around the house, see how it does shooting edges, now, go to a plain wall, and see if it focuses on it.

The first thing I do with a new camera is set it to take a picture when I push the shutter button. The second thing I do is set it so it can't take a picture without an SD card.

I had a similar problem with my d70, years ago. Not a happy ending after a very expensive trip to the Nikon hospital, it still failed. I’m hoping your issue is a setting problem.
