I have a Sony A7rii with a 24-70 f4 lens. I mostly take pictures of my 7 grandkids. Semi formal and formal Pictures. Some landscape shots. I'm thinking of getting the 24-70 f 2.8 Sony. A professional photographer suggested the Tamron 2.8. Is the 2.8 going to be a much better lens and is the Tamron at half the price of the Sony a good choice? B&H and Amazon have the Sony for $2199. Amazon offers the lens with a bunch of other stuff-filters, monopod, flash, SD card, etc. Would appreciate your thoughts on buying the lens, which brand and where to buy. I also have a Sony 50 f 1.4 prime.

The Tamron is just as good as the Sony and you save tons of money.

There is nothing wrong with Tamron quality. Their current offering is a 28-75 f/2.8

A suggestion. If you are wanting the new lens only because it is a faster lens then why not simply raise your ISO. I doubt you will ever see a difference in your photographs. If there is another reason, my apologies.

Would not the faster lens provide better background separation for the "Formal" shots the OP is wanting to do?
That was my impression why it was desired. Unless I misunderstood.

That is correct. Just wondering if going to 2.8 from 4 is worth the cost

Technically you are correct. I just now looked again at the OP’s opening statement but do not see anything specific to separating subject from background. I also just saw his statement below yours that it is indeed what he is after. When will I ever learn not to answer some or all of these questions? Ha!

For me personally I think f4 would work well at accomplishing the separation the OP is looking for. I also would not purchase an identical lens just for the f2.8 over the f4 but that is just me.

Thanks for pointing that out to me,

Dennis

No problem.
I use the f4 fairly well but on occasion would like a bit more separation of a larger aperture. But not enough to get another lens.

Adorama, B&H, KEH. New, used, and/or refurbished. No reason to get sucked into Amazon's trap.

For the type of photography you do, you do NOT need to spend a lot of money to gain 1 f-stop. Think of the unspent money as the equivalent of tax-free income. It is. >Alan

Amazon is an authorized seller of many brands. I purchased my X-T3 from Amazon when everyone else was out of stock. Just be sure the listing says “sold by Amazon”.

You are so right. When I make my decision, I'll let everyone know and why. Thanks eveveryone for your input. This has been fun.
