I shoot with a Nikon D7100. Recently I was out shooting wildlife when I realized that I had forgotten to re-insert the memory card for Slot #1. I have my settings set for Slot #2 as a back up, so with no card in #1 the images were saved to #2.
When I home I downloaded the images and then went to Format the memory card. I got a message: "This option is not available at current settings. or in the Camera's current state." I then moved the card to Slot #1, with the same result. I tried reviewing both the manual that came with the camera, and another after market manual I have for the camera. Neither mentioned any such message.
Question: Do I have a damaged card or a damaged camera, or are my settings somehow wrong. Thank you for any information
Check the memory card to see if the slide on the side was inadvertently moved to the lock position.

Insert a card in slot 1, change you settings to record to both cards and format the card in slot 2? Just a guess. May be worth a try.

My cameras do that when the battery is low and I try to format a card.

Is it possible that the camera wants a card in both slot 1 and slot 2 before it does any formatting?
If everything else fails call Nikon.

Formatting flash memory cards on a low battery is bad like upgrading firmware on a low battery is bad. One can fry a card, the other can brick your camera.
You are a genius. I never know that you could lock memory cards. Many thanks.

That happens sometimes when inserting a card in Slot 1 of a D7200. Never happens in Slot 2 or any other camera.

On my 2 slot cameras I have used either slot for recording without any problems
I always suspect operator error when I have an issue myself. Senior moments are more frequent. Little tab on side easily moved.

I beg to differ, Bill_de. I have a Nikon D3400 and somehow I manage to slide the lock "on" about once a week. Not sure how I do it, but it gets done. Pain in the slot.
