Simply put, if your friend doesn't mind the size and weight and zooming in close is very important...The P1000 would be a good choice.

Thanks, pwr, for your response to my questions. He travels a lot! Iceland! Big clue. I am sure he has experienced the desirability of a longer reach than his 300mm gives him. So in my opinion if he uses RAW, the P1000 is a good choice. If he doesn't do RAW, then the P900 is probably a better answer.

I would have him read these answers to your inquiry on this thread. I would also recommend he go to a professional review of the P1000 such as https://www.dpreview.com/news/0424087429/nikon-coolpix-p1000-shoots-for-the-moon-with-3000mm-equiv-zoom for some pictures and more in-depth analysis. He can go to the search function on the dpreview website and call up their P900 review and picture examples also.

You are a good friend.

I bought a refurbished one a couple of months ago. I'm still learning how to use it. I didn't find it it as heavy as said. It is hard to hold zoomed out, it would need a tripod. So far it's a fun csmera and I have gotten some good pics with it.

You probably won't find another camera with as much zoom capability, but they use a rather small sensor to make this happen. Not saying this is a bad thing, but it is a compromise to say the least. I also agree with several of the previous posters that getting sharp photos at maximum zoom will be very difficult without a solid tripod. Again, not a deal breaker, but something to consider seriously. Personally, I'd look for a smaller camera, with a bit less zoom, and a bigger sensor for a travel camera. Good luck and good shooting to all.
You probably won't find another camera with as muc... (show quote)

Panasonic and Sony both make great 1” sensor bridge cameras that can get you into the 400mm to 600mm range for zoom.
