Canon T3i vs a Canon 5D MK II, Lens compatibility going from T3i to 5D MK II

I have used a Canon EOS Rebel T3i for several years now, I would like to get a Full Frame camera like the Canon 5D, the Mark III and IV are too expensive for my use but the 5D MK II is much more reasonably priced these day (used). My question is about Lens for the 5D. Will the lens I currently use with my T3i work properly with the 5D. Currently the lens I have in FL (I am a Snowbird) are:
Tamron AF XR Di II 18-200mm 1:3.5-6.3 Macro
Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6
Sigma Telephoto 50 - 500 mm AF & OS 1,2

I understand (I think) the difference between a full frame and crop camera in terms of the image size and the portion of the lens being used. I am more interested in is there a technical difference that will render things like auto focus unusable.

Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert, but did some research when I got my 6D. As I understand it all EF lens will work with the full frame body. No EF-S lens will work with the full frame body. I think they said the EF-S lens will damage the mirror, because of the way it fits. The lenses that came with your T3i are probably EF-S. The ones that came with my Rebel were EF-S, You probably should check with Canon to be sure.

Your Tamron 70-300mm and your Sigma 50-500 will work on a full frame camera. The Tamron 18-200mm will not.

As Brownie noted, the 5DII is a full-frame camera with an EF mount, only. Regarding your lenses, you should do your own research and confirm any comments received. Simply take the lens name and google. You'll quickly get a link to various vendors, such as B&H, where you can review and confirm the specifications of each lens. Be sure to review the "for Canon" versions of these third-party lenses. For example, the Sigma lens reports in the product highlights at B&H: For Digital SLRs w/ Canon EF/EF-S Mount, where the for EF is the relevant specification telling you this lens will operate properly on a full-frame EOS body.

Note the Tamron lens is a "DX / EF-S style" lens. I believe it will mount to the full-frame body (unlike a Canon-brand EFS lens), but it will not project an image circle that will cover the full-frame sensor. You won't be happy with the results and should keep for using only on crop-sensor bodies, or sell along with the Rebel body.

The lenses designed for the EF mount will retain full functionality, including autofocus, when used on EOS DSLRs.

Great info. I am thinking that I should look around to see if I can rent to be confident with the answer.

Thanks for the reply.

I would suggest considering a used EOS 7D.
Check the comparison between the 7D and 5D MkII.
The 7D will also work with the lenses you list.
Just a thought.

Some good news is that there are some of the last film camera lenses that will fit the 5DII. In fact, the kit lens that came on the original 5D was from the film era...the EOS 28-105. So look carefully at some of the lenses for the last film Canons as they are full frame for 35mm film. I currently have a Canon A2E film camera that I use, and am considering a Canon 5DII in town, near mint for $525. Will use the lens from my A2E, which is a great lens.

What price is the 5D II that you are looking at?

I can't find info on all those lenses. 70-300mm zooms usually are fine on full frame bodies.

Crop camera lens models from companies other than Canon will mount on a full frame Canon body. However, they won't cover the full sensor at their wider ends yielding photos with vignetting (blackened corners). They may not cover the sensor at all focal lengths. Canon EF-S mount (for cropped) will protrude too far into the body and will interfere with something (mirror) if used.

Keep in mind, the penalty of cropping a photo from a full frame down to the area covered by a cropped camera is huge. While a 5D mkII is 21MP, cropping by 1.6 yields a photo of 21MP/1.6/1.6 = 8.2MP. This is because both width and length of the image is shortened by a factor of 1.6.

While Canon EF-S lenses can not be used on EF mount camera I think third party like Tamron can be used. Still using EF-S lenses on EF camera you gain nothing. I think the 70-300mm is EF mount. Not sure about the 50-500 but I think it's EF mount too. The 18-200 Tamron is EF-S I would think.

According to Tamron, the 18-200 is designed for APS-C Cameras only.

That adds nothing to the conversation.

It clarifies "The 18-200 Tamron is EF-S I would think."
It lets the OP know that at least one of his lenses will not work with the EOS 5D MK II he is considering.
I think that adds to the conversation.
But hey, what do I know. I am not you.
