For many years I have used A
a Canon20 D. It is now too heavy for me to carry that camera and a tripod to shoot in the field. I would like to buy a compact camera. My main interests are shooting macro and taking good videos. I am looking seriously at the Panasonic Lumix X 100 I I Any suggestions?

I had the same concern last year. Check out the Olympus PenF, with a great interchangeable lens selection. Small and light, it will fit in your pocket with the "pancake" zoom lens, just like a point and shoot. But much more in features including built in HDR and perspective control! JimR

Taking good videos of what, Meadowbuilder?? Nature, sports events, etc. How much reach do you want your camera lens to have?

Your main interest's are good video and macro, that leaves out compact mirrorless cameras. since you already shoot with a Canon DSLR, look at Canon,s long line of fixed lens "G" series compact cameras. They have much the same settings as a DSLR and the video is decent.

The videos I want to shoot or of my grandchildren. But I am saving them on flash drives so when they are older they’ll be able to enjoy them again

Check out the Olympus OMD e-m5 Mark II. I can wear mine around all day with a 14-150 II lens attached and not feel it. Great IQ, weather and dust sealing, 5-axis internal stabilization, wide selection of lenses. This was what I switched to when my Nikon gear became too much. I’ve never looked back and wish I’d made the switch sooner!

I would not save them on flash drives. Use a regular mechanical hard drive and keep backups. Else, the pictures may be lost over the years.

The Lumix does take 4K video which is a noticeable step up in quality. The camera is also compact with a fixed small variable focal length lens if you don't want to use changeable lenses.

I believe the Lumix is a Micro 4/3 sensor, so slightly larger than "1 inch" sensor, but smaller than APS-C.

The Panasonic Lumix ZS100 has a 1" type sensor and a lens that zooms from 25--250mm, f/2.8--5.9. It's regarded as a good camera, although it is a bit soft around the edges at the extreme ends of the lens. It also has what Panasonic calls Intelligent Zoom, or I Zoom. It's much like Sony's Clear Image Zoom, a process that provides double the optical reach without appreciable loss of image quality. It gives the ZS100 and extended zoom range of 25mm to an equivalent of 500mm. And it has an EVF. Currently it's priced at $499.00, which makes it quite affordable. It's not exactly shirt pocket compact, but you'd never notice it in a jacket pocket or a cargo pants or shorts pocket. I understand it does pretty good video, too.

The current Lumix zs or lx offerings are excellent choices. Reasonably priced and compact. Check out some YouTube videos about them as well as the camera decision web page.

Do you mean Panasonic Lumix DC-LX 100 II with a 4/3 sensor?
