My insider tipped me off that she would arrive today and gave expected arrival time, so off I tromped to Corfe Castle common. Luckily I bumped into an Associated Press pro who was following her journey online and kindly kept me abreast of progress. Not the best of light but nice to get some shots before she gets swamped with visitors. Ten of the family, myself included, will travel on her (well, be pulled along by her) on our local heritage line on Sunday. All journeys sold out now!
So, hope you like these wide angle shots. I realise they won't be everybody's cup of tea so feel free to critique if you'd like to, it is appreciated.

I recall that perspective being used for loco images when I was a nipper Linda, often as a drawing rather than a photograph. It seems to add a bit of drama.
After she’d been past I phoned Lin and she drove down to pick me up (standing about on a windy common for an hour or two isn’t her thing) and we went off to get fish and chips. Lo!, sitting in the fish and chip shop was the loco driver eating his supper! He hadn’t wasted any time getting there - courtesy of the Transport Police.

Now that’s a trick question rgrenader, Flying Scotsman started that service in 1928 - a bit late for Sherlock. His ‘Final Bow’ was set in the run-up to the First World War, when he had retired to keep bees. His final words in that story, if memory serves, were something like ‘there’s a cold wind blowing from the east Watson’. Conan Doyle knew how to string together a good tale!

I like them both for different reasons. In the first shot, the sky is not your friend. But, then, we can't always control that). The steam coming off the stack does blend with the clouds. The perspective of this shot is interesting, though, because it gives a sense of anticipation. The train is still in the distance; but you can feel that the giant machine is about to make a very dramatic entrance into your space. In the second shot, the engine has arrived in all its glory. Sure there is some distortion from that lens. It adds rather than detracts from the scene. We get the sense of size and power with that engine steaming past at full song. Both shots were well worth the effort and I'm envious of your upcoming adventure riding that great train.

I’m a bit of a killjoy when it comes to riding on the local railway - once you’re in a carriage I don’t see what diffence any particular loco makes, they can’t run at any great speed no matter how big they are! Yeah, yeah, I know! Our various grandchildren love it. Especially when it’s the Santa Special!
Personally, I’d rather be trackside takings pics.
