The Causeway, Holy Island

If you visit Holy Island don't forget to consult a tide table. Twice a day this causeway is flooded and there is no other way on or off the island... other than by boat.

EDIT: The little hut is a refuge if you get caught halfway across. The tide comes in very quickly, many cars get abandoned when drivers decide to make a last minute dash.

Beautiful image. We’ve been there twice now - once for a couple of days in 2013 when we stayed on the island, and again last year when we drove over from Seahouses for a special dinner. Beautiful, quiet place. Looking forward to going back sooner rather than latter.

Excellent scene and narration--the trek looks rather treacherous.

Thanks, John, if you get the timing right there is no difficulty in walking across. There is the old pilgrim's route which is marked with poles stuck in the sands, you definitely need to get this right if you are brave enough to try it. Here is a photo of the old pilgrim's route... just follow the posts and be prepared to get wet!

Its interesting to me that you went to the extent that you did, to preserve the dominance of the roads procession into to distance. What are the accommodations like in the hut?

Thanks, fergmark, the distance is an important factor in the impact of the picture as is letting blues predominate to emphasize how wet and bleak the place is.

The refuge is about 8' x 6'. I didn't go inside but I imagine, at the most, it has a couple of rough wooden benches in it. I'll post a closer picture of it.
