Planning a Texas Wild Flowers photo trip to central Texas in about two weeks - any status on the wildflowers from Texas Hedgehogs would be appreciated. Would you recommend the last week in March or the first week in April?
Spring popped out four days ago in the San Antonio area. There are wild flowers up in my side yard. In two weeks we will be up to our jeans in them devils! Thank you Ms. Lady Bird Johnson!!!
Do a Google search for 'Texas Hill Country wildflowers'.
Check back closer to the time of your trip. The wildflowers will have spread quite a bit farther north by then. The trick is to catch the flowers before the grass grows up and obscures them. If the weather stays cool, the grass will grow more slowly.
I plan to make a trip into the Hill Country on March 22nd, even though there is currently a 50% chance of rain that day. My itinerary will include Willow City Loop, SH 16 from Fredericksburg to Cherokee including Babyhead Cemetery, SH 29 from Burnet to Mason, and Park Road 4 near Inks Lake and Longhorn Caverns. My SUV (with my photo business logo and contact info on the rear window) is about to log a lot of miles that day. Hopefully I'll see some of the Texas Hedgehogs along the way!
Mowers were out along the high ways recently. A little rain in San Antonio, none of much concern in the Austin area. It was cool to cold the middle to end of the week, today sun popped out and it got warm. No real rain this week (maybe one day mid week) but it is getting warm this week and weekend.
By the way, I am located 200 Mission Road (320 Yellowstone). It is a commercial/residential property, I have a large front parking lot for my building, which I own. The place is at ALL the cross roads of I-10, I-35, 90 and such. I also have a comfortable apartment in the rear of the garden with bed shower, fridge, stove AC heater and shower toilet and vanity. If you would like to stay over just send a note and it is yours. One thing, Bubble the big nosey cat (28 pounds of snuggles) lives in the garden and he will want to come in and poke around. He is more like a big goofy dog with cat traits, so expect to visit with him if you come to visit.
Also, there is way to many pieces of photo gear and props with a full lighting studio...how you get a field of Texas wild flowers in there I don't have a clue but I'm game! LOL!!!
I don't see any blue bonnet yet in Dallas.

Years ago I was told that Dallas and San Antonio lay in different lines of the Earth and this effects the weather and the way things grow.
Also, San Antonio is at the foot of the area called the hill country of South Texas. Our weather here is warm to hot and vary humid. Great for growth and such. Also, there is that Edwards Aquifer, tones of water.

In Central Texas I've seen beautiful field of flowers as late as early June. Please be careful of chiggers and fire ants if you go walking in the fields for close ups. A simple insect repellent will help with chiggers. Fire ants are easy to spot their mound if you look for them. If you see one just stay away from it and you will be OK. I'm looking forward to your posting some shots. I haven't been home in many years.
Already seeing a lot of indian paintbrush and bluebonnets here in travis county. Over the next week or two should be great timing.

We went late March/early April last year and the wildflowers in the Fredericksburg area were in full bloom.

Yep, ol' Fredericksburg is a great place to get into the wild flowers. FM roads with kids and young people going through open fields of blue bonnets!
