I think it depicts what this person wants you to think what it is. I'm sure this is not the total and honest depiction of the whole of Route 66.

I've drove 500 miles on 66 and enjoyed it.

Put it back on the list. This is a lot of cherry picked decay. Reminds me of a Paris Match edition I picked up once in 1982. They had photos under the caption of "Detroit Automakers Struggle" they had taken of some small town used car lot down on its luck. I thought at the time what kind of propaganda is this? Not even closely resembled a new car lot - let alone the average used car lot in America.
So hit the road and get your kicks.

I've traveled up to 4 state numerous times there has been lot decay over the years. People not able to do the proper restoration. Not enough money spent each location to watch over everything. Blame walmar5

Get off of the interstates if you want to see main street USA. I've driven from Connecticut to California twice, keeping off of the interstates as much as possible. There is a beautiful sadness to much of "downtown" towns along our nation's highways. We were on US 40 in Illinois at lunch time and the sign said, "Visit our downtown". It was a small town. It once had a vibrant downtown that served the local population AND travelers along US 40, but no longer. The beautiful, old buildings with papered over plate glass windows told the story. We had to look at our map and find the next interchange to I-70; there we had our choice of fast food joints. After we ate, we, again, got on US 40 for a leisurely (and beautiful) ride through Illinois on the way to California.

The attached photo was taken on US 50 in Scipio, Utah. We had to get on the interstate for a short time and a few miles from this site was gleaming gas stations and fast food restaurants.

I done R66 and could have taken the same number of pictures that showed an opposite view. Show me a scar, I'll show you a rose or two.
