No disagreement that this is the way most "modern" photographers look at their craft. I have to admit that I've become a big fan of autofocus in digital world, but I pay attention to my exposure choices, whether or not I'm shooting full manual or not. There was no better tool for learning exposure and dynamic range than Kodachrome (25 speed, not the more forgiving 64 in my film days) and certainly a majority of today's photographers would be a mess if they had to use transparency films from that era.

I'm never really "satisfied" with my work - it was so in film days and is true today no matter what digital or film I'm shooting. The only thing that I disagree with you on is that I think there are a lot more disciplined shooters out there today, even in digital world, than I expect you do. There have always been lots of snapshooters out there, and there always will be. And (so-called) "serious" photographers will still try to perfect their craft and take advantage of all the "LAG" tools and innovations they can. To me it's all about intent and motivation.

Work hard. Don't cop out with tech and post processing. Learn exposure. Learn how to translate your "vision" into an image. Work hard.

Oh, and work hard....

No need to worry, Andy. But if you ever become satisfied, then worry.

I'll bet that Air Lion crew was pretty disciplined--and motivated,
Unfortunately, their only option was to thumb through the User's
Manual searching for the "stop_diving_the_plane" command.
Unfortunately, there wasn't one.

Then you suffer" --Stevie Wonder

Anybody who thinks complex software or firmware can be validated
believes in miracles. Anybody who trusts their life to it is a fool.
Whatever the advantages of the MCAS, is it worth killing 346 people?
Wanna be part of the next "beta test"?

"How does that MCAS thing work, Captain?"

"Uh, ur, well....it overrides the pilots controls for the sake of
safety."

"How does it know when to do that?"

"Uh, ur, well..."

"Would it be all right if I deplaned right now?
I've changed my mind--no need to fly today."

Automation ain't the way. It started around 1800 in order to make
more widgets per hour at lower labor hours--and was enormously
successful. But now it's aimed at removing the need for people to
know their jobs--or to second-guess them.

Making more photographs per hour isn't the photographer's main
problem (except maybe for the DMV). His problem is how to make
better photographs. And computers are not noted for thier
creativity or artistic taste. (Neither are the guys who write the software.)

Fortunately, there are many aircraft and cameras that work well
without relying on firmware, and that are not ridiculously complex,
and that the user can understand--and even troubleshoot.

Anything beats sitting there, helplessly thumbing though a manual,
trying to find out how to make the dang black box do what it's
supposed to do.
