One of my dogs developed dry skin - scratching and chewing. Over the past few months, we've made several trips to the vet - the last one yesterday. Adding up the bills, it's cost about $600 so far, and he's still scratching. Yesterday's bill was $144, which included a $68 injection and a $48 prescription. Each of my dogs has a larger annual medical bill than I do. Of course, I have decent health insurance. When I was a kid, it wasn't a major financial decision whether or not to bring one of our animals to the vet.

I feel with you Bob. I rescued a dog 5 years ago. Took him to the Vet where he told me the Dog had Lyme disease, a trick knee, bad teeth (16 had to be pulled), a bad heart and fear aggression. A trainer told my wife to have him put down before sunset. That was 5 years and a few thousand dollars ago. He’s still here and he’s my constant companion. I was really hoping in the last tax reform I’d get to claim him as a dependant.

Yup, pets cost $$! First dogs we had were three month old sisters, cattle dog/ridgeback mix from the pound. Within a week they had parvo, cost us $400 and we had them for 16 years and even their yearly wellness checks were expensive. Several dogs later, mow a min poodle that had to have one eye removed a couple of years ago because of glaucoma, a common poodle problem. She's 13 now so we expect more expense down the road. But they've all been family and we've been glad to share their lives.

Two dogs here, and we have pet health insurance.

It works very well. Over several years and several dogs, the short version is that you will be out of pocket unless, or until, you have some big expenses - for example cancer treatments.

Of course, YMMV depending on how you view your pets. Family members for us, so as much as possible the consideration is doing all we possibly can for their health and well being. But I also know, and despise, some people who, here with a very substantial mosquito population, won't spend money on heart worm preventive medication.

Having pets can be inexpensive, but generally speaking they cost quite a bit. Best to be prepared for that before taking one on.

The good news with a mixed breed, and especially strays who have survived and recovered from hardships, is that apparently they tend to be healthier overall than pure breeds, although that is a very broad brush.

My adult daughter texted me this morning that one of her family dogs has an $800.00 ear infection.

It not a good thing to say, but if my dog had a major medical problem I would have to put her down. Would not be able to pay the vet's bill. Don't like it but that the way the world is today.

You are so right Jerry. I spent more on my animals than I did on my kids. That balance of Vet cost has increased with technology.

You don't make enough money to get that tax break. LOL

Gerry, try feeding the dog some local honey. Seems to work on some cases of skin problems.

Read up on feeding bananas to dogs. I've heard they are very good for them. I don't own a dog so I have not had the opportunity to do so.

Hey, cats are the same. Have $500.00 wrapped up in itchy ears. Pets are family.

Love this post and all the responses - Vet bills seem to be the bane of many pet owners and, yep, wish I could claim my hound as a dependent. Yet, as I sit here getting my daily dose of UHH, I look down curled next to my leg and figure you can't hardly put a price tag on unconditional love...
