Canon EOS RP - what it can do?

Well a picture is worth a thousand words, check it out:

There are a few shots with my Leica but most is on the RP.
I have to confess a lot of missed shots due to the autofocus not being very accurate or fast enough. It is a bit infuriating, at the end I had to resort to manual focus for a few shots.

But the image quality is great, sometimes superb. Not a lot of dynamic range though.

For birding is too slow although I made do.

The lens is the Canon EF 400mm f5.6L.
This was the second day of shooting, the first day was not good at all, first time I was using the camera no doubt.
Surprisingly the battery lasted throughout (approx 2 hours walking).

But the other day I did some product shots and it died pretty quickly, go figure (approx 3-4 hours of shooting but camera was off between setups).

Enjoy!

The images look good. AF with many mirrorless cameras is not as fast or accurate as we want for wildlife. I am only familiar with the Olympus Em-1 Mk II and I know it is a pretty good camera for action and wildlife photography. The new Olympus promises to be even better but I have no experience with it.
I would say that not knowing how other mirrorless cameras do in this respect that a dSLR body should be the first choice for sports and wildlife.

I am surprised that you find the auto focus of the RP slow and inaccurate. I have the EOS R and the auto focus is both fast, extremely accurate, and consistent. I consider it to be superior to my 5DIV. I wouldn't think that the RP would be too far behind. I suggest you go over your auto focus settings with a fine tooth comb. Is the Dual Pixel auto focus turned off? It's pretty useless, IMO, largely because it provides little benefit but slows everything down.
The RP uses the LP-E17, the smaller of the two batteries Canon currently uses. I was wondering if it was going to produce longevity issues. Looks like that could be an issue. Still, carrying a spare and changing it is not a big deal.
I hope you get these issues ironed out. Few things are more frustrating then spending money on something that doesn't do what you want it to.
Nice shots, BTW.

Why didn’t you post your pic’s on this site (UHH) instead of google?

These are interesting comments indeed. I received my Canon RP about ten days ago and I have no focus issues. However, I do not shoot sports or birds in flight. The RP has a "Kids" mode for focusing on fast moving Kids. It also has a face recognition focus which will narrow down and focus on one eye as long as it doesn't move a lot. While I'm pretty certain that the focus isn't in the same league as the Sony cameras, however, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it did while finding and focusing on an eye. The LP-E17 battery is small and with all of the setting up the camera and fiddling with it, I haven't taken too many shots/charge. That is why I also have a spare battery and while the battery is small I just carry the spare in my pants pocket.

I bought the Canon RP as a travel camera. My plan is to carry the Canon RP with the 24-105 mm F4 L lens with the OP/TECH USA Shoulder strap (with braided cable) and a spare LP-E17 out on the economy, shoot Raw and enjoy the trip more. So far I'm well pleased with the Canon RP. Also, while my Canon RP is not as sophisticated as my 5DIV with dual pixels etc., it is lighter and much less of an obstacle and concern in certain places. I certainly wish that you will be able to find workarounds for the shortcomings of your Canon RP.

I know this is an old post, but just in case...

Be sure to update to the latest firmware. Focusing on my RP with my 100-400 even with tele-extender is incredibly fast and accurate and even in low light.
