Back in October last year I visited the Didcot GWR Broadgauge shed for an afternoon and evening photoshoot and was amazed at the lengths some of the re-enactors had gone to to create authentic characters to compliment the locos. This gent in particular impressed me with his attention to detail. But one thing bemused me - why were his trousers and shoes spattered with mud? The answer was simple - as the attached b&w borrowed from the www will explain. All I needed was some ships chain! Your thoughts on my image appreciated.

I love the detail in the chain in #1. - so much texture, depth & colour, I'd love to see a shot just with the chain!

Hi Dave

I like them both, but the Sepia is more in keeping with the time. Perhaps you could lighten the shadows a little at the bottom of the photo. Just my thoughts.

Excellent detail in the chains--nice processing, too.

The reason why the gent's trousers and spats were spattered with mud is that the color is of chains on display whilst the B&W is of chains at the work site. Many work areas were unpaved, hence the mud splatters.

I enjoy going to Revolutionary and Civic Wars reenactments. It is amazing how much the actors strive to get their costuming correct. However, sometimes there are misses, like the one who wore his Nikes because he couldn't find his boots in time for the presentation.

Great shot of the new gent and kudos to the actor's depiction of the scene.

Hi Heather, thanks for taking a look. I will probably do a sepia version but this one is part of an exercise on getting the two shots to match colour wise using a couple of techniques I’ve learned. Part of what seems a never-ending learning curve! The shadow is just my taste in things - for the sepia I’ll try to emulate the foreground in the 1880’s version.

Thanks for your thoughts on it Stephan. The 1880’s shot is actually taken on a dockside, they are ships chains on a huge horizontal capstan. The clue to the mud is in the title.
My chains are on a vertical capstan at a quarry, and are considerably smaller. I’m not happy with them and will try doing something with our local ferry chains - although making a bunch will take some work as the part you see is a single chain.
Yes, I’ve seen one or two bloomers with re-enactors but mostly they try very hard to get things right. Great fun to photograph too!

In Tampa, the Renaissance Fair has a Steampunk weekend. This photo reminds me of that.

Steampunk seems very popular with the Cosplay lot, I’m pleased to say, and make an interesting subject. I went on a Steampunk shoot last week at a Victorian water pumping station - and another on the railway the week before, so I have two shoots-worth of Steampunk to do something with yet, it’s just a matter of getting the time.
Thanks for looking-in Don.
