I just found out about a new iPhone app, Spectre. It makes people disappear from a scene, does long exposure waterfalls, and light trails.....all handheld....for up to a 9 second exposure.

I just paid $2.99 and will try it out.

I'd love to hear more about your experience with it after you've used it a while.

There are many interesting and useful photography apps available for smartphones. I use several installed on my android phone. Right now, my phone camera has more features than my dedicated pocket camera.

I have an iPhone because it is the only phone that runs the only photo app I use. That app has proven invaluable. Otherwise, I use my cameras for photographs and my iPhone for communication.

True for me most of the time. But there are still times I don't have a camera with me, and I'm glad to feel the iPhone in my shirt pocket. My wife has even taken a couple of very good photos under that circumstance, although I can't claim the same.

Curious about that photo app you have on it, Bob?

Andy, I just posted a long exposure waterfall photo using the new app. I also made a lady and her dog disappear from an on site photo, using a 5 second exposure.

I plan to try the light trail setting.

So far, this is my favorite app for handheld long exposure photos, and the only one I know of to make people, dogs, and probably moving cars disappear.

The "cell phone" is becoming more and more than just a phone. In 5 years time, I wonder what impact it will have on total DSLR sales.

If you’re only using an iPhone for communication, you’d be better off getting an old flip phone. The iPhone and other smart phones are really mobile computing devices capable of so much more than just handling phone calls. Taking images is just one small part of of their abilities. Indeed, just on the photo aspect they can take and develop images, engage in post production, publish, print (via WiFi connected printers) organize, store, share etc., etc. Finacial activities - not just organize your finances but pay for things. Create - documents, artwork, spreadsheets. Access information. Monitor health. Play music. Watch video, tv etc. Navigate. Monitor traffic, monitor your vehicle’s efficiency. Monitor weather. Automate your home. Provide information when traveling. So much more.

But they are actually worse at "Phoning" people, that is to say, contacting others and speaking to them using your ears. I have a Casio G-Zone milspec phone, which I use for that purpose, but I also have an iPhone, which does all the other things you mention. I wish the smart phone makers would put a little more effort into that "phone" part, and keep their new models smaller than the size of a paperback book!

My wife and I often travel together and find that I get clear signal in places where she's going "Hello? Hello???? Who is this????"

What a great solution to the overpopulation problem--just take a picture of the people, and they're gone! For only $2.99!

Or does it just make them suddenly appear in someone else's scene? (That might explain some scenes I've experienced).

So, you take a picture of people with this app, and they're gone, but only if you look at the picture? This sounds a lot like the quantum mechanics paradox of Schrodinger's cat, where the cat in the unopened box is both dead and alive, until you open the box and look in, at which time it is either dead or alive.

And what happens if two people, using the app, take pictures of each other at exactly the same time? Is there anybody left to even look at the picture?? (Wait, let me guess---they're somewhere in a box with a cat, but who knows if they're dead or alive...).

Or what if I take a picture of myself with this app, and I disappear---does that count as virtual suicide?

This probably goes without saying, but:
on any cameras, very long exposures will make people (and anything else that's moving) disappear.

That is correct....what makes this app on an iPhone unique is that a tripod isn’t required.

I shot light trails tonight with this app....I was not impressed. Handheld shots looked terrible. The Slow Shutter app, on a tripod, does better light trails.
