My little Thanksgiving kitten, Leaf, is approaching five months now, and she grows more compelling by the day. Here are a couple of recent portraits followed by one taken when I'd known her less than 24 hours. She now exudes confidence and attitude. One of her more charming traits is her tendency to "chirr" rather than meow, trotting around the house making questioning trills. It's as if she's singing to herself.

I do give her a hug and a kiss each time you ask me to. And each time she rears back as if to say, "Get off me!" But that's because she's so busy, always off to the next event in her scheme. Earlier in the evening I did observe her snuggling and purring in my housemate's lap...and sadly I have to admit she's become my housemate's cat. I just do the portraits.

She lives with another oft-featured animal on this site, my dog and reluctant hiking partner Ted, who in late January had hip surgery and now considers himself an amputee and will not try to use his perfectly good, and repaired, right hind leg. (I am beyond frustration with him). Last week Leaf came trotting into the kitchen with her Canada goose toy in her mouth, positioned her petite self beneath "crippled" and unaware Ted, who was standing around waiting for a handout, and swatted him on the back of his front leg. He fell over. Things like this give her confidence and contentment.

She is, isn't she? As I've said before, I've had lots of cats, many of them beauties, but Leaf has that PRESENCE. Star quality. When non-cat people tell me that cats don't have personalities, I reply that you simply have to interact with them. And Leaf insists on interaction. And if her ear tufts get much longer I'll have to braid them.
