I have a Canon 50 mm lens that seems to have tight field of view.
Any advice on a 35 mm lens.
I use it on a Canon T6i DSLR

A 50 on a Canon crop sensor will be about an 80 (1.6*50) on a full frame.
A 35 will be like a 52.
You need to figure how wide you want to go. If you want a 35 you'll need something around a 22 (35/1.6=21.8).

For your cropped T6i, consider these three:

EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
EF 35mm f/2 IS USM
EF 40mm f/2.8 STM

I used a EF 50 f/1.8 on a 7D, also a cropped sensor body. I liked the mild telephoto field of view, but too found the 80mm equivalent FOV to be a bit tight for close-up situations. Changing to a 35mm lens on the 7D provided a very nature, almost 50mm field of view. I now shoot often at 35mm on a full-frame camera, where the EF-S 24mm lens would give you a 38mm field of view, similar to a 35mm lens on a full-frame camera. These three lenses let you pick between the equivalent 38mm to 64mm FOVs, selecting the lens that best fits your desire for a "normal" fast prime.

I purchased the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens for my Nikons. It has vibration compensation which is real plus when you can't use a tripod. I've used it for model photo shoots and gotten sharp, blur-free photos at shutter speeds down to 1/30 second. It also has a metal lens barrel and is fully weather sealed. It would give you an equivalent 72mm focal length on the 1.6x crop Canon. It's available in Canon mount also.

They also make a 35mm f/1.8 SP VC and just announced a 35mm f/1.4 SP VC.

Another vote for the latest version of the Canon EF 35 f2 - one of Canon’s sharpest lenses at a reasonable price.

One of my favorite lenses is the Canon 24mm, in fact since he borrowed it so much I got one for my son last Christmas, another nice wide angle is the 10-18mm zoom, not as fast but wide and light to carry.

If you go to the B&H website and look at various primes! The specifications will give you the field of view, I.e. 90 degrees.

I think you will find your 50 a good size after going wider. Just remember wider is about perspective and not what fits into the frame.

I would agree that you would be happier with a 35mm lens. It’s great on my crop sensor camera and I even prefer it over the 50 on my full frame camera.

If you are on a budget the 40mm 2.8 pancake is nice for under $200. Since you are on an APS-C the Sigma 30mm 1.4 ART at around $500 is also an option.

Just to clarify, on your T6i a 50mm lens is a "short telephoto". There wouldn't be a whole of difference with 45mm, 40mm.... Even 35mm is still slightly telephoto.

Sigma makes a 30mm f/1.4 lens that would best serve as a "standard" or "normal" lens on T6i (i.e., not wide angle or telephoto). It ain't cheap, at about $500.

If you want a mildly wide lens, try a 28mm or 24mm. Canon's EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is a nice lens and fairly compact. The EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM lenses have image stabilization, if you want it. All three of those Canon lenses sell for around $500. Or, if you want something super compact and very inexpensive, Canon makes an EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM "pancake" that's currently selling for $129.

A 20mm or 18mm would be a moderate wide angle. I use Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM fairly often. It's quite good, especially on an APS-C camera like the T6i, since this type of camera "crops" the image and only use the best and sharpest center portion of the image.

16mm, 15mm and shorter focal lengths are "very wide" to "ultra wide". There aren't a lot affordable prime lenses in these very short focal lengths.... But there are some good zooms. For example, there is Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM for under $300.... Or their somewhat better built and "faster" EF-S 10-22mm USM, which is about twice the price. Both have excellent image quality. There also are Tokina 12-28mm and 11-20mm, Sigma 10-20mm, and Tamron 10-24mm.

Do you have the kit lens that came with the T6i? That's typically is an 18-55mm. You could use that zoom to explore the different possible focal lengths and help you decide what you want.
