DSLR vs. Cellphone Cameras

Peeps hand me a phone to make their picture
like they would hand me a P&S years ago. The
P&S were easy. The phone OTOH is very hard
to hold and I accidentally hit those buttons all
around edge ... or the photo app times out or
trying to touch the focus or the shutter button
makes the device freak out ....

How about shooting action in low light or produce 30-50 MB raw files that can be cropped to a large degree and still retain decent resolution? I could go on, but that small sensor kills your low light / high ISO performance and max resolution. Sensors are improving, but bigger will always be better (although "good enough" is good enough for many people.)

My iPhone X does great as long as your not trying to zoom it, it’s over then. I take some of my best shots with it because it’s on me 24/7/365 vs my 5D4 that’s arriving Thursday that will not stay with me everyday because I can’t watch it every minute of the day.

I have problems using my cell phone's camera. First, I didn't know that I could take pictures in front of me and in back of me. The phone kept taking selfies before my granddaughter showed me how to take the photo in front of me. Then she showed me how to enlarge the photo which i still have problems with do to my arthritis in my fingers. Let me keep my D810 where I can control my DOF and control low light situations.

I really don't think this is anything new. The people that only use cellphone cameras are the same people that only used point & shoots. Most people were perfectly happy listening to AM radios rather than investing in Hi-Fi. If anything I'd say there are more people using SLR's now than back in the days of film.

Does anyone other than me remember the Kodak Instramatic and even the Pocket Instamatic. Shortly after them, we had disposable cameras. There has always been an alternative to serious photography.

Seriously? You can run a D810 but not a cellphone camera? I think you're putting us on.

Cell phones are serious photography now, and will be even more serious in the future.

Cellphone camera are getting better. That is a plus because the fill a small niche. I don't feel comfortable with a serious photograph done with a cellphone camera. Remember, the lens is made of plastic and subject to scratches. I have a question: Does it make sense to purchase a wireless file transmitter (WFT) to carry the load of technique and materials?
