Duck.....another damn calendar

It is very unusual to have all these different ducks here at one time. Please forgive the names and the rather large print. All images captured with my 5dsr and the 100-400 mkll at 400mm and f5.6. All taken on the same day in between rain showers. I could not get closer than about 100yds as when I moved so did they. The light was bad, the water was brown and churned up, and we had a great time. These are all tightly cropped and sized to print 8 x 11 for this years calendar.

Trying to get closer can be very frustrating. I often wish for a smaller lake so the ducks did not have the ability to move so far away. Living in Hemet, if you are interested in traveling a little bit, consider Santee Lakes just east of San Diego. Most of these species are residents there and easier to approach often within "point blank" range.
That said, these shots will compliment your calendar well.

Thanks for the hint bajadreamer, I will give Santee Lakes a try. I am looking for the Wood Duck and I have seen pic's of them posted here from the San Diego area, maybe that's the spot. We are preparing for this years super bloom and may just venture a little further south.

As a side note we came very close to buying a place in San Carlos last year and plan on looking down the Baja this year. Years and years ago we kept a sail boat in San Felipe and have often yearned to return to the Sea of Cortez.

Excellent set and can understand the frustration, uklucky2, but after seeing all of those species of ducks and other birds in one day maybe a name change to lucky2 would be in order! Seriously they are great images for that distance, and will look great on your calendar. If you were in the east you could take care of the Wood Duck image tomorrow morning as they arrived several weeks ago and are preparing to nest in our nest box as they have done for more than twenty years. Several weeks ago we had several buffleheads that would not come in close and about two days ago a flock of Lesser Scaup made their appearance in the pouring down rain and had intended to really get some good shots early this morning but have not seen one today, and as with you, we do not have either the Buffleheads or Scaup very often. Good luck with your calendar and sure that it will be a beauty. Take care!

Thanks Corky, we did have a great day. We used our golf cart as a movable shelter and dashed out between rain showers, an adventure. Wood ducks are so good looking, but I did not think their range included any locations near me. Last week a Wood duck image was posted here with the stated location being San Diego. Now an other hoger has given me a location and has suggested meeting them there and renting paddle boats to move about the lake. An other adventure awaits, if I can talk the wife into it. I fully expect to fight 80 miles of traffic, rent a boat and......no ducks, but what the heck, Nothing ventured nothing gained. In closing Corky luck being what it is, no ducks on the ponds today.

Maybe they have placed some nesting boxes around the lake for the Woodies and would almost bet that they are using them if that's the case, and we have been toying with taking a trip in our little camper van to Merritt Island in Florida for a few days as they usually have some beautiful waterfowl, but have similar thoughts as we are getting older and it's about a 750 mile trip one way but oh do they usually have some great birds that can be viewed and photographed from your vehicle while taking the seven-mile drive on their Black Point Trail. Good luck and take care and hope that you will see many Wood Ducks!
