You confusion confuses me! It should win for Best Cinematography which was brilliant, and Best Picture because, well, it's definitely the best movie of the year.
I guess we will have to agree to disagree!

Director Alfonso Cuarón also did the cinematography. He started out as a cinematographer, and it shows. Best picture is hard to predict these days, with more nominees and ranked-choice voting. But Cuarón is supposed to be a lock for best director, and the favorite for cinematography.

Different strokes for different folks.
For me, the design elements in the photography were just outstanding.
We all bring out own background and preferences into what we like.

Oh. It was a brilliant film masterfully made and better than most of the production line stuff out there this year. The cinematography is amazing. The acting is brilliant. The story telling compelling to a level we have not seen in decades let alone this year.
But other than that, I would agree with you.
And now it has won Best Cinematography! As well as best foreign film.

Don't forget Best Director.
The film on WWI was actually named, "They Shall Not Grow Old." Make sure you watch the Peter Jackson extra where he describes his motive behind making the film and how he did it.
