Just watched the film ROMA. You can watch it on Netflix and I highly recommend it. The Mexican film set in the 1970s is beautifully done. Cinematography is masterful - shot on 65mm digital black and white.

I've read that it's very good. The star is "indigenous," and those people are discriminated against in Mexico. Maybe the success of this film will make her life easier.

A black and white foreign language film with no stars, and it's one of the front runners for the Best Picture Oscar, Best Director, Best Cinematography (director Alfonso Cuarón started out as a cinematographer) and of course, Best Foreign Language film. If it wins Best Picture, it will be the second year in a row a Mexican director wins (last year was “The Shape of Water” by Guillermo del Toro)

WOw!!!! Maybe I'll see it now that you all say it is great. I immediately went to see "The Shall Not Be Forgotten," the WWI film so wonderfully done depicting the British Empire's (not neglecting her greatest offspring, the US) contributions and sacrifices.

WHile they used still photographs, mainly, to tell the story, they never lost sight fo the artistry of the action documentary photos themselves. A great viewing for everyone from an historical standpoint. It is also a real homage to the photographers of the day. NO MEGAPIXELS!

It was not mainly still photos, it was film footage shot with hand cranked movie cameras which was digitized to correct the speed of the film, the exposure, cropped to create camera movement, colorized and made 3D.

I agree, thinking about watching it again when the Oscar show is being televised.

It seems that every time I see an ad for a movie that calls it a "Cinematic Masterpiece" it turns out to be a bomb. Has anyone else noticed that? I'm not saying that this one is though. I have it on my queue with Netflix.

"Cinematic masterpiece" was my choice of words because that's my view on this movie. Some may, of course, disagree but I stand by it.

I WAS referring to ads on TV for newly released flicks. It would actually mean more coming from somebody on this site. As I said. the movie is in my queue. I'm assuming that you streamed it?

I watched it on an extra-large screen via Netflix. It is (or has been) playing at select movie theatres in some cities.

The photography is a wonderful work of art. Some many frames could be made into a picture that would hang on a wall.

I agree. The cinematogropher should definitely win an Oscar for that category.

I watched it as well and am confused as to how it could possibly be a contender for an Oscar.
