Hello everyone! I’m interested in hearing your opinions on using the 1.4 III extender with the 70-200 2.8. How well does this combo work together?
Thanks,
Danny

I have the EF 70-200 f/2.8 L II and the 1.4 III extender and use them on my 5DIV. They work well together. I forget how many f/stops of exposure you lose. A few, I believe, but nothing like on the f/4-5.6 EF 100-400 L II where my previous cameras, a 6D and a 7DII, lost most of their focus points. The 100-400 was limited to f/8 with that extender.
With the 5DIV, that extender, and the 70-200 I still have all my focus points.
Image quality suffers only very slightly from what I have seen. Since I have the 100-400 I don't have much reason to use the extender on the 70-200 but I did do some testing when I got it and found it to be a good combination.

Your 70-200 f2.8 will behave as a 98-280 f4 (you lose 1 stop).

Yep! I just stuck mine on my camera and that's what it is: f/4
Ok great! I was wondering what the widest aperture would be. I also have the 100-400 ll and the 7d Mark ii and so f4 sounds good. I shoot wildlife and a lot in the woods so I think it will be really good in certain situations and low light.
Thanks!
Just to be sure. If you use the 1,4 converter on the 100-400 your wide open stop will not be f:4 but f:8 with autofocus only possible in the center spot.

👍👍 exactly. I use that combination all the time, and it works fine, but it’s f8 at 400 mm (f5.6 + 1 stop).

GREAT - but you do not need the III version extender unless you have the II version lens .....
..
I have the 100-400 ll and have the 1.4 lll. I haven’t bought the 70-200 yet.
Thanks
Yes, I’ve had the 100-400 and the 1.4 lll. The TC works much better on the 5d than on the 7d for obvious reasons but slower to focus.
I have the canon 1.4 II Extender. I use it on my 70-200 f/4 L IS lens. I think it actually makes the images sharper. I don't know why but they do look sharper with the extender. You will lose a full stop with the 1.4x and two stops with the 2x extender. So, if you have the 70-200 f/2.8 lens your aperture will only go to f/4.

The trade off is too much for that particular lens in my opinion. Crop the image instead if you are using a FF body.
I did multiple side by side crop vs the 1.4 III over several days and crop images were vastly superior. I used the Spyder Lenscal target with micro adjustments optimized with identical framed size.
The light gathering loss and reduced sharpness isn't worth it.
A crop censor camera or other lenses may offer better results and your tolerance may be different...
For what ever it's worth - I slipped a 1.4TC onto my 70-200mm f2/8 and took a photo of the very same area done with the barefoot 70-200mm. Then cropped both images to a point where the resulting views showed as close as possible the exact same thing. The image with the TC was more pixilated than the barefoot one.
One of these days I'm going to try that again and try to do more than point and shoot with the ASPC camera set to "A" while mounted on a tripod. The object of interest was a concrete picnic table in a park about 500 yards away.

Which 70-200 2.8? If it is the early one, there is no advantage to the III over the II.
But in general you would be at f/4 which is fine for wildlife. In fact, if you go with the 2X you would could shoot at f/5.6 and 400mm, which also works well for wildlife. I abandoned my 150-600 in favor of a 70-200 2.8 and a 2x. It is just more versatile and compact. I found I rarely shot over 400mm anyway and what I did was not satisfactory, as I shoot handheld.
I’ll be using that combination on my 5Dm4 in the morning at Shark Valley. I’m happy with it anytime F4 is OK
