As we were going eastward I spotted this boxcar (in situ).
WCCL 47778
And it does look like a new paint job.
Thanks.
It looks like it has been left there after a derailment. The torn up ground appears to be from the big equipment rerailing other cars.
Looking at the left front top, I will agree.
Thanks for looking and commenting.

I saw this box car in the Cajon Pass last year. Discarded rolling stock can make some interesting photographs.

That is very true. Sometimes the artwork on the cars can give a clue as to its travels.
Also, if you can find the designation given to the car by the first/last owner, You can look it up in the rolling stock register on line, providing some information and shots of earlier times.
Thanks for sharing the one you saw.

Where on the car would I find the designation by the first and last owner? Is it in code? What is the URL of the registry lookup?
Thanks for the information.

It can be almost anywhere on the car. The one above, it is top right under the roof line on the end facing the camera. Also on the trucks that are laying on the right.
Here is the site I use often, showing WCCL 47778 at the bottom of the page.
http://www.mmp70160.rrpicturearchives.net/archiveThumbs.aspx?id=65380&Page=17You just enter the designation and do a search. You should get several pictures sources that are attached to the designation. There are several lists out there.
A lot of fresh ballast in the original image- sign of the restoration after accident.
