I've been using Affinity Photo since it was introduced and like it lots. I had tried Photoshop Elements a while back and found it to be pretty unintuitive.

Affinity is gaining in market share and has a pretty healthy following here in UHH. It's also inexpensive. I will do just about everything Photoshop will do, but it doesn't have a photo organizer. But I use Windows folders VERY effectively and don't feel a need for an organizer.

All the best!

I switched from Lightroom to ON1 which takes the best featuires from LR and PS and provides tons of tutorials. Free to try, what can you lose? Also I agree Gimp is probably the best free program.

Photoshop/Lightroom is the Mack Daddy of all editing programs, and is quite a bargain at $10 per month. If you don't want to buy into Adobe's subscription model, I would suggest you trial either Luminar or Photoshop Elements. Luminar will have an easier learning curve, but Elements will get you into the Adobe universe through familiarity with their tools making it easier should ever want to use Photoshop/LR.

I use Photoshop Elements. You can find it for $80-$100. The Premier version costs more but also edits videos. Has three levels of editing - Basic, Guided, Advanced. Does much of what Photoshop does but has its limits. Its Organizer is a database where you can Import photos, categorize and tag them for easy searching. Be prepared to learn how the database operates so you don’t hopelessly lose track of the photos you’ve imported. That was my biggest hassle.

I agree; ON1 Photo RAW 2019.2 is the best full-featured, but easy-to-use photo processing software, with a lot of support in video tutorials, and continued added functionality (free within the year).

I've been very pleased with PaintShop Pro. Very reasonable. Look for an older version in a box (version 9 or less, should go for about $20). It has tutorials.

Just to clarify, using the Organizer is optional. I didn't even install it when I was using PSE 12 and 13. I think it installed with 2018, but I just ignore it

ON1 Photo RAW 2019.2 offers a powerful cataloging/indexing/keywording system which at the same time is VERY EASY to use - quite straightforward and not at all complicated - and fast!

I use both Aurora HRD 2019, and Luminar. Both programs are affordable and have powerful editing capabilities.

Gofast, no need for you to even consider spending that much! Photoshop ELEMENTS is a stripped-down version of the full-blown Photoshop and will do ALL you'll need for doing most any requirement you'll run into, and it's less than $100.00. Many times on sale for as little as $49.00. Don't know about layers? Don't bother with them right now. Just do what Post Processing you require and learn as you go, and if the desire is there, delve into using Layers later. Elements is very capable... just 'learn as you go', and use what you require at the moment. Another great advantage: You don't need to 'rent' it.... once you buy it, it's yours.

For $49 you can get Affinity Photo. It's Photoshop on steroids! Heavily into "layers," but you don't have to mess with 'em if you don't want. Learning curve is a bit steep, but Serif has lots of on-line tutorials.

Maybe this already exists, but as a novice returning to photography after thirty years,I am frequently lost in the acronyms in UHH posts. This post, a friendly and useful one, is a good example. Has anyone created an acronym dictionary out there?

The best value (price/performance) software out there is the PS/LR CC bundle. It is a complete editing/image management solution. There are other things that are cheap or free, but support is often limited, and capabilities uneven. At $120 a year, even very popular programs like On1, which sells initially for $100 - if you wan to stay current, will cost you an additional $80/yr for updates. With PS/CC you pay a little more every year, but you get more than you get with On1. Little by little, On1 is closing the feature gap, and I do like it's presets and filters for photo editing - but I also do image restoration, graphics and other things with PS that just can't be done with just On1.

Lightroom does image management with a catalog, raw editing and conversion, geotagging, publishing, and it has a printing module. It has an API and many third party developers have written excellent plugins to extend the capabilities of LR. PHotoshop is a full blown image editing/image browsing/raw conversion/printing solution. If it can be done to an image, you can count on being able to do it in Photoshop. Together they are pretty much an industry standard.

I strongly suggest you consider the bundle, especially over PSE, which is a crippled version and not upgradeable.

Currently I use Windows 10's built in photo app for my jpeg's and Canon's DPP 4 for the raws. They both have libraries and work good for my purposes. I bought Luminar 3 and liked it but the update with the digital asset management messed me up really bad. Considering I only lost $70.00 on it I don't feel bad. For me, it is all about the simplicity of all I do. Windows built in photo app does a good job of sprucing up jpegs and the Canon software that comes with my 80D does a good job of processing the occasional photo I process from raw. The best part about it is I already paid for it. If you are just an enthusiast as well as older like me the best part of this hobby is taking the picture. Pretend you are back in the film days and compose your shot, get the exposure right, press the shutter. BINGO!!!!!!! However, if you are young and/or a pro or a want to be pro only then go big on the processing process. Good luck and God bless!!!!!!!
