When I drive to the observatory, it is a 30 mile drive, but the road isn't straight. Using Google Maps, the distance is 14 miles as the crow flies. The clouds have gone away and I can now see the snow on Mt. Hamilton, situated just above San Jose, CA which is to the left, about 4200 feet lower. But it is just too far to get a sharp image. After trying about 30 times with two different cameras, I found that it is just not possible to get a sharp image of the 120 inch Shane Telescope which is the big dome seen in the distance. Too much air turbulence. To the left a little lower is a smaller dome which houses the Lick Refractor.
Anyway, it is nice to see sunshine for a change. Its been a long time with nothing but rain.
