Well, I don't know how to read these switches.....
I guess I should learn.

When you look down the line and see the red sides of the paddles, that tells you that you cannot go down that line. If you see the metal side (may be also green or white), then you can go down the line. Otherwise, it indicates the direction one can go at a switch.

The one in the shot is normally at a switch, the yellow bar being the throw arm. However, here it is being used as a stop for the end of the spur. Guess one uses whatever is available at hand. I think that the short line will put in a switch to tie in the spur back with the main line sometime down the road. The rails have been replaced and it is a working line.
