Saw a retrospective movie on the life and work of Harold Feinstein last night.
If it ever shows up in yr area try to catch it. His early street work mostly in NYC is special.
This was shown at a local film festival and has popped up at a number of film festivals around the world.
He did live locally for the last years of his life... he died in 2015.
Thanks. Sounds good. I haven't been to Coney Island in years. The last time I went, I was dating my wife, and I had a full head of red hair. That hair was like a magnet to the "barkers." "Hey, Red, win the lady a prize." "Come on, Red, three balls for a quarter." :)

Google him, he's a that " Feinstein", another great.
He is/was a hidden gem....
https://www.haroldfeinstein.comBTW Red; you would not believe how Coney Island has evolved since you were last there. Take a trip during the summer...yes, when it is beyond crowded. The Boardwalk and surrounding areas are electric and now a place for the entire family to enjoy. Don't forget your camera!
I haven't been there in years. It's a remarkable place.

Yes go when it's crowded - not too late at night. The area still has a relatively higher crime rate than the rest of NYC as a whole - lots of homeless. I was frequenting a lot down at Coney when in 2017 taking care of my deceased uncle who lived in the Luna Park housing complex...always wanted to get night time shots of the Wonder Wheel etc. using long shutter speeds. If you really want crowds go for the Mermaid Parade or the Hot Dog Eating Contest in the summer.

I'm suggesting you go during the day time. Anywhere at night in most parts of NYC (and most big cities) are places to be prudent. The weekends will be the busiest and best times to get the feel and energy. I have taken my grandchildren every summer since they were 2...five years now. Never..never a safety issue at these times.

Even daytime can be dangerous there - the key is to stick with the crowds (or your own crowd) and not wander off into the side streets or desolate areas of the boardwalk alone (especially flashing expensive photo gear)....My uncle used to tell me he heard of knife slashing, shootings and muggings during the *daytime* off peak times - the local police post warnings in the Luna Park complex. It's quite a bit higher than in other parts of NYC such as midtown, or the area of Brooklyn where I live, where I have no fear walking around midnight, although any area can be dangerous if you are not alert.
I haven't been to Coney Island since I was on an altar boy trip from St. Francis Xavier in the Bronx. Had to be 1958 or 9. We took the subway down from the Bronx. Too long of a subway ride from AZ.
I had the opportunity to meet Harold Feinstein while I was working at Fujifilm. He was a convert to our film and we had many conversations as he started to shoot with it. He gave me a signed copy of his book "100 Flowers". Every time I shoot a flower I think of Harold with both utmost admiration and raging jealousy. One of the nicest men I met in the industry.
There's a large number of You Tubes on him as well. Just type "Harold Feinstein" in the search box and binge watch all day! He's a remarkable talent. It is kind of neat watching him with a Small camera and wide aperture wide angle lens. He shows us JUST how it IS DONE! My impressions were he selections of backgrounds, foregrounds and he exquisite timing to capture movement, expressions and gestures.

I'm down there on a regular basis. There are more police down there than ever for the last 10 years. I don't think its any worse than anywhere else in NYC. It's very family oriented now, especially on the boardwalk. But as in any city, you still need your eyes open.
Boardwalk has been done over since Sandy did away with the area. MCU park (Cyclones) home field, for the NY Mets that plays in the Short-Season A classification New YorkâPenn League. Great games and even greater photo opportunities of a game. Right behind is the famous CI Parachute jump which is lit up via LEDS and changes colors, great photo shots. Famous Nathan's for a dog and fries, more great photo shooting. The old and famous wooden roller coaster, stand underneath and let your photo ability take you away. Also I forgot there is one of those new roller coaster ride right behind MCU park, corkscrew type. The NY Aquarium located at CI and all within walking of one another. Luna Park and all the small shops on the Boardwalk, great area for anyone with a camera. You also have the wonderful CI beach and pier. A 24-70mm is all I had and worked for me... just be aware of where you are if going at night time. I live in Brooklyn and wouldn't go down there after all of the shops and rides are closed, midnight. If in a group no problem, go anytime you like and there is a large Police showing at CI, a police precinct is located a half block off the boardwalk. Good luck and enjoy yourself. Don't forget the Subway station, that in its self can be a day of shooting alone.

Sorry but that's simply not true. I've worked down there for 30 years and it nothing like the past. Plenty of police on many corners. Stay out of the shadows and you'll be fine.
