Thank you for including the side views of Shay drive line.
It may be just me, The slip joint below the number 1 on the cab looks like an extreme angle.
Maybe, it's normal....

You're welcome. That really fascinated me. I thought so too about the angle. I'm sure this was a slow machine, so that joint was not turning fast but still, it would wear out faster.

Here is a look at one our highly detailed G Scale model Shay locomotive and second the best side profile I have of the Colorado RR Museum Shay. It isn't the best shot but I think you can clearly see the drive shaft in question is more parallel to the ground than the one in the opening photos in this topic. It might be fair to suggest that the truck under the rear of the locomotive and its tender aren't properly positioned under the tender/loco. Perhaps that is making the drive shaft angle down like that.

As a side note...normal maintenance even on the G Scale model Shay is labor intensive. Lots of lubrication points that require frequent attention. We don't run the Shay very often for just that reason.

What you say must be the case with the Shay at the Baltimore Museum. That straight shaft makes much more sense. Maintenance intensive I can understand! Thank you for the pictures.

I'm guessing these trucks are from a different shay locomotive.

Very nice group, I've always been a real fan of Shays, I also noticed the strange angle.

I too, am a fan of the Shay. I live an hour south of Cadillac, Michigan where Ephraim Shay first devised his locomotive.

That's cool, I lived in Colorado for 60 years and there were quite a few of them around the state, the excursion trip from Georgetown to Silver Plume is done by Shays, I haven't back there in several years but they had several of them.
