Lens identification on Canon 80D

It isn't a big deal, but my 80D identifies my Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD as a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM. Have any of you guys experienced this and can this be updated to id the correct lens? Since I am just an amateur enjoying photography, this isn't a big deal, but I am curious about what is happening.

I wouldn’t expect it to correctly identify any other than a Canon lens.

My 80D identifies the Tamron 18-400 correctly. It does not show the serial number. Don't know why it doesn't id the 100-400.

Well now if your camera thinks the data received through that lens is as good as what it could "see" coming through the f2/8 300mm company lens then you got a really good deal! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth...

When I got my Tamron lens, I actually added it to my list of lenses, and now it's correctly identified by LR.

LOL, I agree, it just makes me curious. It's a better lens than I am a photographer.

By the way, how do you like that combination of Canon 80D and Tamron 100-400? I've been thinking of adding that lens to my collection.

That is one huge "upgrade". It is also the best trade since Ruth was sent to New York. You are correct in that it is not a big deal. Canon's EF180mm macro lens shows up as an off-brand on my set-up. Doesn't effect anything, especially image quality.

Canon would have to update the firmware in order for the camera to recognize it as a Tamron lens.

Dleebrick, I really like it, have been able to get some really nice bird pictures, it's a better lens than I am photographer. I'm hoping I can master it for the Blue Angel air show in Pensacola in November.

For the Atlantic city air show Aug 2018 I used my new Canon 77D. Used one point focus and exposure. Great results.

I found when I put this lens onto by 80D that when I used Lightroom for the first time it didn't recognise the lens. I then had to click on the righthand side and chose Tamron as the Manufacturer and then on the next option choose the 100-400 lens. It them updated the 3rd option to the Adobe Tamron 100-400 f4.3 etc etc. Suggest you try that.

Go into your camera menu. Along the top are icons. Select the one on the far left. Looks like a camera. On the pages of that section look for "Camera Aberration Correction". Clicking on that will open a page that will tell you what lens the camera thinks is attached and will also give you the option to enable or disable lens correction based on in-camera data for that lens. If you have correction enabled (a good idea usually) but the wrong lens is indicated then the corrections made will be made using inaccurate data. Not good!
Your Canon EOS Utility program, which is on the disk that came with your camera and gets installed on your computer, gives you the ability to enter into the camera the correct lens make and model a well as the proper correction data.
