I have a Nikon D80. A blinking Err is showing up. I have cleaned the contacts, changed battery, memory card, etc. Is there anything else I can do to remove the Err? My camera is probably 14 years old.

Turn it off, remove the battery and card, then replace the battery and turn it back on.

If that clears it, turn it off and reinsert the card after 1 minute.

If that clears it then you just had a gremlin.

If the problem returns with the card then that’s the issue.

If it returns when you put the battery back in try another battery.

If none of that works you need service.

Sounds serious if you took the battery out and that did not clear it. Dead shutter? Sad to loose a good old tool.

If your lens has an aperture ring make sure it is set to the smallest aperture (highest number)

Also use a dry cloth to wipe the contacts on the lens and the camera, the error code the D80 indicates that the camera is not communicating with the lens. This can be caused by dirty contacts or the aperture ring not locked in at F22.

At one time I had an err code on a D80 and cleared it by removing the lens and putting it back on.

I'm gonna guess {and hope} that if the OP cleaned the contacts, he probably already removed the lens and put it back on.

I had that problem with the Nikon 200-500 mm lens. Make sure it is not the lens, if you have another lens, mount it and see if you have the same issues.
OR, use the two button reset first and see if that clears it up.

I had the same problem with my D80. I sent it out for repair. For $100 it was repaired, cleaned and calibrated. Here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/REPAIR-SERVICE-NIKON-D80-Flashing-Error-Message-Err-/283327518569. Worked for me; still using the D80.

I have a D80 that has been into the Err zone for about a year. The problem is in the Shutter control system, started with random occasional fails, and got worse over time. NOTHING helped, but for a while I could get shots by pressing the DOF button prior to a shot. Now, I can get it to work (take pic) maybe one in every 6-8 attempts, sometimes worse. By the way, this is a known issue with the D80, some get it, some don't, probably has to do with when it was built during the MFG cycle..

It is uneconomical to repair, however several shops will do it, but you might have to wait while they find a donor/or find the parts. If you don't want to spend a lot, pick up a good, low click, used D90 or something like it/newer. You will be much happier. Check MPB.com, Roberts Usedphotopro, KEH, B&H , Adorama, Cameta, Ebay (last resort), the first 6 offer some sort of warranty.

Minor correction, I see on the post previous to mine that someone found a repair for $100. Not bad. But for less than $200. you could get a newer, better model.

CBW,
I had the same thing and nothing cleared it up, after trying everything that was mentioned...
The only other thing to do would be to reset the camera and if that does not work, it will need to be repaired, which I did...
There is a member here on the forum whom repairs the ERR msg on the cameras his name is;

RICK J RIGGINS
2585 E PIKES PEAK AVE

COLORADO SPGS CO 80909-7019
rjriggins11@comcast.net

I guess if you do a search on the forum, you just find him also...
He fixed it for $85 + $15 shipping...
He did this last March and it is still working as it used when new...
If you are industrious, you can search youtube and there are a few videos on how to do this...
HTH
Larry

PS: Just did a search and his user name on UHH i; rjriggins

Good catch, I didn’t think of an AF/AFD LENS.
