Looking at the 70-300 nikon vs the 100-400 tamron. The nikon gets rave reviews for focus speed and sharpness. The tamron gets good reviews also. I am a bit more interested in the tamron due to its longer reach but am concerned about focus speed. This lens would replace my 55-300 nikon kit lens on my d7200. Any opinions out there.

I buy Nikon lenses to compliment my Nikon bodies— but I certainly don’t know it all.

Sigma's 100-400 should also be on your radar. Same pricing as Tamron nbut seems to review a bit better in auto focus and sharpness.

My wife used the T 100-400 on her D7200 for birds. The quality is very good for £400 grey . You must have the fine focus adjust spot on . The same tamron 100-400 on a D850 is fantastic despite the D850 having less POI and is indistinguishable from the N 200-500

What interests you the most. Rave reviews or good reviews?
Quick question. If you were to buy the Nikon 55-300 lens and not a camera would the lens always be the dreaded and maligned "kit lens"?

I just bought the 70-300DX VR to replace my 55-300 which died. I got a Nikon refurb from Adorama for $149.95. It’s for my D7200. The deal was too good to pass up. At that price you could buy both and see for yourself

In my humble opinion, Tamron is a much better value than Nikon. You can look test with a microscope and see really minimal differences, but for the money you can’t go wrong with Tamron.

My 2 cents, the Nikon 70-300mm AF-S VR G FX version - not the AF-P or DX version - there are so many it's easy to get them confused...although the 100-400 Tamron is a close 2nd.

Nikon is one of only two scientific companies that manufacture their own glass from scratch. They manufacture their lenses to work specifically with the software of their specific camera's.
Tamron buys their glass and many components from other manufactures. They manufacture their lenses to work with multiple camera bodies.
Yes the Tamron has more reach.
But the Nikon will retain it's value better than the Tamron.
The Nikon 70-300 gets rave reviews and on your D7200 it's effective field of view will be 105-450 mm. It should cover everything you need, if extra reach is warranted, their is an addition .3 range build into your camera. Work your Plan, Ride with the Brand.

It's hard to put a number on focus speed because it changes with conditions. I can't imagine any piece of equipment that could measure the time from pressing the shutter till the lens achieves focus. Comparisons and reviews are what lead me to the "best" item. In most of my shooting, focus speed doesn't matter.

For me the 70-300 or 55-300 DX would be totally inferior at 300mm to the Tam 100-400 at 400 but to be sure you should look at DXO..The 55-300 for example is only at its best at F8 and falls flat on its face at 200 mm By 300 its only resolving 2 MP on your sensor .
People say a lens is sharp only until they see a sharper one.

I've had the G version of the Nikon 70-300, but not the newer AF P. I've had the Tamron 100-400 pretty much since it came out, and I've been very pleased, focus speed is excellent, it's easily hand holdable, and I would recommend it. There is a tripod collar available for it though I would have preferred it to be included, it's not an option with the Sigma. The link below is a recent post of mine using the Tamron 100-400

I don’t know all of the answers, but I use only Nikkor lenses with my Nikon camera bodies. I have had D70s, D300, D3000s, D700 and now I am using a D810. My lenses such as AF 50mm f/1.4D, AF 105mm f/2.8D, AF 80-200 f/2.8D (since traded) have worked with all of these bodies flawlessly. My more recent acquisitions are AFS 70-200 f/2.8G VRII and AFS 300mm f/4 both of which were bought pre-owned. I buy Nikkor glass since it is designed by the same company that makes my bodies so I know that they will be compatible up and down. My first 300 lens was a 300mm f/4.5 AIs that was made in 1982 and couples with the light meter on my D810 for shooting in aperture priority. So I would buy Nikkor and not Tamron or Sigma. But that’s just me.

I have both of these lenses, use both of them and they both perform well. I think the 70-300 (full frame PF version) might be a little sharper and a little quicker to focus and it is a little faster lens- f5.6 vs f 6.3 but it is really a toss up except for BIF. The Nikon is the winner then. The Tamron can be a little persnickety in low and high contrast and low light situations whereas the Nikon just takes it all in stride. But the Tamron is 400 mm at the long end and sometimes length is what you need most. If you get the Tamron then do get the lens collar. It is a long lens and it helps to balance the weight. And you can attach a pistol grip to it. It is very well made. As for the dock I bought it but never have used it. I have used both lenses in inclement weather with no problems. The first lens I bought for the Nikon d 7500 was the Nikon 70-300 mm lens and then the Tamron came out. If the birds are close in and the light is iffy I will use the Nikon lens.
