I will be traveling to Escalante and Bryce Canyon in early April. I was wondering if I could get suggestions for photography locations.

Just about anywhere you look in Utah you will find a photo op.

How long do you plan on spending there? And are you looking for drive to spots or day hiking, shorter hikes? Almost anywhere can be a dive to place. Shorter easier hikes would be something like spooky slot. Or you can day trip some of gulch and peekaboo they are very close together. Look up Utahtrails.com and you will find a ton of info for these. Have fun and don’t forget to check the weather.

It's an amazingly beautiful spot ... with a pretty good guide book on the park available at the gate. One thing I suggest, make sure you take (or buy at the gift shop) some Yaktrax or other slip-on crampons (put over the bottom of your boots or shoes to provide traction so you don't slip on the ice). The formations are created by the continual freezing & thawing a majority of nights through out the year. So there is frequently ice on the edge of the canyons which could lead to either a nasty fall or missing a spectacular shot.

At Bryce, Inspiration Point at dawn. Easily accessible from the parking lot and you may not have as much company as the other recommended spot, whose name escapes me. The other spot was closed when we were there. Wish we’d done Escalante when we were there.

You might want to poke around the Landscape forum https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-132-1.html

You could also ask there and get a lot of feedback.

Also a lot of Bryce Canyon shots in the gallery from prior to the Landscape forum

Hwy 89 between Page and Kanab is pretty amazing. Lots of side roads to explore. Ektachrome State park, Big Bend, the wave, N. rim of the Grand Canyon. I think you can get passes for the wave online. It is typically very popular and you need to plan well in advance. They have a lottery but you would very lucky to get your name drawn. Be up early (predawn) and out at sunset will get you rewarding shots.

Have fun!

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon will be closed when you come. Opens the middle of May. The wave is a reservation only venture and you can reserve on line. The problems are someone buys up all of the permits on a regular basis not allowing anyone else to get any. You might luck out though. Zion will be nice that time of year and always affords good photo opportunities. Bryce Canyon will likely be snowed in but may be doable.

Just a quick question. How does someone buy up the permits for the Wave, its all done on a random drawing. They give a few walk in permits also on a random drawing for those that are there, even for the walk in permits there are enough people to make drawing out rather slim. I have been putting in for the wave every year for about 9 years and have not drawn out.

I sympathize with you and I do not have an honest answer but that is what I was told so you can take that for what is is worth. I tried also and called and called and got no where so I eventually gave up but I do know of a few who have gotten in. And when they go there there is no one there. I would love to go and am desperate to go and I would also like the solitude. I live close to Zion and the crowds now... I have lived in this area most of my life and when I first moved here there were no crowds. I really yearn for yesteryear.

Have you tried the local Chamber of Commerce or tourist office?

I have been doing some research through tourist books, hiking books, and YouTube videos. I want to be prepared so I don't waste my limited time wondering around not knowing where to go. I can hike 5 - 10 miles, but other members of my group can probably only go 2-3 miles from the car. We have 2 nights in Escalante, a night in Bryce, and four nights at Zion. Thank so much to all who responded!

I would flip the nights in Escalante with the nights in Bryce. Try to go to Bryce on the night of a full moon if you can. You will be rewarded by the canyon under a full moon. There is no other place like it under a full moon.

Get this book. It’s a great resource.

If you have high clearance 4 wheel drive go to White Pocket and South Coyote Buttes. There is guide services that can take you there if you don’t have a capable vehicle.
