I’m considering purchasing this lens. I shoot wildlife and macro, and I’m hoping to get excellent sharpness and bokeh from this lens.

Also has anyone used a Tele converter on this? And does it compromise the clarity and sharpness?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 🤗🌹

The lens is wonderful and works great with teleconverters. But, what wildlife and macro are you thinking about? Most wildlife situations benefit from lenses that start at 400mm and "serious" macro will benefit from a dedicated macro lens, where this 70-200 can be made to fit, but would not be the first choice for either.

Yes. Thank you. I have a dedicated macro lens, a prime 300mm, and a 200-500mm.

I also have The Nikon D 7500 and the D 500 cameras.

Thinking of making a trip to see the puffins in ME and folks recommend this lens. Especially because you cannot fit the larger Lens through the duck blind opening.

Just want to make sure this lens Is great for other types of shooting.

This is not a good macro lens, sorry.

I've used the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 for HS soccer with an 1.4 extender, at night. It's a bit short for action on mid field, but cropped nicely for frame-filling results. Puffins are much smaller than soccer players, so you'd need to be 15 - to 30-yards at 200mm or just a bit further for 280mm or your cropped results will begin to get too small, even with the crop factor of the bodies. For a 1-time trip, you might consider a rental specifically for the trip rather than purchasing another lens that overlaps with existing equipment.

For a Nikon macro lens, I would consider the AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED.
The AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4D IF-ED runs around $1,800.
I did have at one time the Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G macro for DX for around $280. Good lens for not a lot of money.

Thank you! I have a Tamron 90 mm 2.8 which is fantastic, and the Nikon 40 mm which is 2.8. Both are very good.

Perhaps getting the 105mm 2.8 might be redundant. ??

I bought the lens in “Excellent” used condition from mpb earlier this year and use it with a D7100, which makes the effective focal length 105-300mm. Excellent lens. Quick response, very sharp, great bokeh. You’ll enjoy it.

The 70-200 f/2.8 FL is an excellent lens but it's really not a wildlife lens. I use the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 and Nikon 200-500 mounted on a Nikon D500 for wildlife and the D850 + Nikon 300 f/2.8 for my zoo photography. The 70-200 f/2.8FL is an outstanding portrait lens and good for shorter distance images.

I used that lens for years. It is a fine lens. I would not go greater than the Nikon 1.4 III TELECONVERTER.

Thank you David. Ok. Now I understand

I have the Nikon D 500, with the Nikon 200 to 500 for wildlife also and I love that combo. I was just wondering what else I could use this lens work, sounds iffy for me.

I go to an annual event in the summertime that honors Veterans. There is one hired pro photographer, who takes portraits, and uses a Nikon D810, with a Nikon 70-200 f2.8. It's the older version he claims. His wife assists him, using a Nikon D750 with a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. They represented a couple of publications. Two of Nikon's great lenses. However, I didn't see them last summer. There were family members taking photos with Nikon and Canon cameras. Some of them crop sensors. I even saw a Nikon D200 there last summer. And he took most of the photos at the event.

Sounds lie you already have a great kit. I’m surprised you don’t already have an 80-200(ish)2.8 lens. I swear I will never have another bag without this range lens. It is so versital. I’ve shot swing dancing in very low light. Sports candids. I’ve used it w a 1.3 and a 2x extenders and have had great success. I love that lens and it spent a lot of time on film and digital bodies.

This may not be "long" enough for wildlife and definitely not a true 1:1 macro lens. Having said this, it is one of my fav lens for a lot of work.
Cheers!
