If you don't know then pay a local tech to do it, and transfer your OS, programs and data also.

A lot of SSD'S come with software to move everything from your old drive to the new one.
If you don't want to/or know how to hook up an additional hard drive internally get a USB to Sata Interface
and when done replace your origional drive with the SSD.

There is a lot to the answer based upon what type of SSD. Much much more information is needed to get a decent answer.

Laptop or Desktop?

What type of SSD will your motherboard support?
M.2
Sata 2
Sata 3

What operating system?

How familiar are you with operating system software?

How are you with computer hardware in general?

A bit vague... try asking over at https://www.tomshardware.com/

I just installed 2 Samsung 2tb 860 EVO's in Raid 1 mode. replacing 2- 1tb HDD's Raid 1. A cake walk with the help from folk over at the above link.

This

This is the type of question that, if you have to ask, probably the best idea is not to DIY.

It's usually easy on a desktop (not a Mac) or a laptop. Lots of info and video online. For a desktop, you'll probably need an adapter. When in doubt, pay a pro - but get a price first. It can be done in about ten minutes - not counting copying your C drive onto the SSD - so you don't want to pay $200 for labor.

Go to iFixIt.com and see if there is a repair/upgrade guide for your computer.

Go to macsales.com if you have a Mac and look for their videos that show you how to do it, and their interactive guide to what can be upgraded on your Mac, along with exactly what you need.

SSDs are relatively easy to install. Migrating data is easy on a Mac. There are TONS of online sites that explain how to do it on both Macs and PCs.

Thanks for all your help and response to my inquiry of 'how to install an SSD' in a laptop.
I have a desk model HP COMPAQ computer, but my three sons have PC Laptops.
I was hoping that you all could give me tips and leads on what is needed and how to do it so that I could aid them in this project.

I will be 80 this month...
I have an ASUS Desk Top.
My son is a IT working for a Hospital chain.
He did it for me.
He also doubled my RAM while in there.
Damn what a difference in speed.
I'm just in "FROG HEAVEN" now.

Hardware install is no different than a hard drive. If you can access the hard drive easily on your computer (on laptops some are easy, some are difficult) you can do it.

You should, in the BIOS of a PC, if it has the option, change the SATA Operation setting from ATA to AHCI. Makes better use of the SSD.

If installing Windows, change to AHCI BEFORE installing the OS.

If you want to clone your existing Windows hard drive to an SSD you have to fix Windows so it will boot from the SSD. The AHCI driver has to be installed.
This is too involved to explain here.

If this is all more than you can deal with, have a knowledgeable friend or tech do it.
