Need advice from all you DXer pro out there. Can't seem to make up my mind, too many to chose from. These are the lenses I'm looking at on EBay.
Nikon 18-70mm f3.5
Nikon 16-85mm f3.5 vr
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 pro
Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 c
And there's always Nikon 35mm and a 50mm and a 85mm micro to cover it all.

Got way too few clues about YOU ... meaning
zero. But, I know about ME. Only one choice
has VR, so I go there. YMMV.

Have you considered Nikon’s 17-55 2.8?
It’s an oldie but is a pro level lens made back when Nikon had only DX bodies. Has an f/2.8 constant maximum aperture.
I never experienced any problems with it not having VR, but as said above, YMMV.

You beat me to it. The 17-55 2.8 is best DX lens I've used on a Nikon. Old, build like a tank, readily available used.

I have used the Sigma 17-70 extensively (W/OS) -among others for Canon and Sony - it is a great lens that I recommend highly.....

The 16-85mm has good reviews. The D500 16-80mm kit lens is suppose to be a better lens, but more expensive. I own the DX 18-55mm VR, the 35mm f1.8G, and the 50mm f1.8G. I recommend the DX 35mm f1.8G prime lens. You don't necessarily need VR with any of your lenses list. IMO. Your other f2.8 lenses are good choices too. Especially the Sigma.

I have the Nikon 18-70 and the Sigma 18-50 and I prefer the Nikon.

Unfortunately DXO cannot take your images. Only you can. Sharpness is more the ability of the photographer vs. ability of the lens.

I always recommend buying true Nikon (Nikkor) lenses if you can afford it. There are cheaper non-Nikon lenses of course but you get a lens that will not have an "in-camera" profile so distortion correction can't be done and no metering data that helps ensure auto-corrected exposure (even WB can have issues).

I know people buy/use non-Nikon lenses all the time. I am a systems engineer that knows that an "engineered solution" is going to produce consistent results, and no I promise I do not work for Nikon. The way I see it bodies are fleeting but lenses are, or at least were, forever. I.E. invest in lenses and buy bodies that can do what you require.

Having said all of that I use D7200s and LOVE them with FX lenses since most of the issues with vignetting, distortion, etc are literally beyond the physical sensor edge and what remains can are auto corrected. I literally just bought another one to replace the one I bought in Aug 2017 with 314028 shutter clicks (and still working btw).

Back to lenses eh-um: If you have a focus screw (D7000-D7500) then I like the older lenses but I bang mine around so older non-plastic lenses like 70-210mm f/4-5.6 AF and AF-D and 35-70mm f/2.8 AF-D are not super expensive and work but my go to lens is the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. I have two and can't recommend them enough.

Hope that this helps a little. I know I went off topic a bit but felt it needed to be said.

Thanks,
Jim Cameron

While you are contemplating which zoom to grab, put a 35mm F/1.8 in your pocket. It is one of the best "cheap" lenses I have ever owned. I emphasize cheap because of the price, and that's how it feels in the hand. The results more than make up for that.

I wouldn't rule out Tokina.

I use the Sigma 17 to 50 f2.8 ex os on my D7100 most of the time. It is a great lens, constant apeture, and very sharp.

I loved my 16-85 VR. Took it and a bunch of other lenses on a NP 6-week tour and it was on my camera 98% of the time. The image quality was great and it was very manageable for hiking and long days. (Because of other issues, I’ve since gone micro 4/3s.) That said, it was my favorite lens.

I’d choose one of the Sigma lenses because of the f/2.8. I have several Sigma lenses and love them all!

What type of photography do you shoot more often? None of the lenses you mentioned are good for action or wildlife just to give you an example.
If you want the lens for general photography, so called walk around lens, then it is a different story. If portraits will be an important part of what the lens will be used for the 16-85 will be a very good choice although any lens with a 70mm focal length will also do a great job.
Any of those zoom lenses can be used for general photography and all of them will give you excellent results assuming you do your part. Primes are a different story and I am going to say that the 35mm lens will have the same field of view of a 50mm lens with full frame and it could be very useful even for portraits although you should keep in mind that a zoom has more flexibility.
I only use Nikon optics and I own the 18-70 lens which is a very good lens. I never used the 16-85 but having VR is an advantage and I know it also has great optical qualities. Perhaps that is the lens you should buy.
