The last steam locomotive that was built for the Union Pacific Railroad,
a 4-8-4 Northern Class steam locomotive. It was used as a high speed (100 MPH) passenger train locomotive. The engine and tender comprise a massive machine that is 114' long and weighs 454 tons! The main drive wheels are 80" in diameter! An awesome machine! Photos were taken in 2016 outside of Kansas City.

Boy! I shot a ton of pics of the 844 when it was here, in K.C.. I even played hooky from work. I got some of my best shots when it went through Bonner. My desk top background is of the 844 when it was parked at Union Station. Can't wait for the Big Boy to debut!

When the Big Boy heads for Ogden this year, the chase will be the mother of them all.

Anyone know the purpose of what appears to be sheet metal plates on the sides, up front?

Doesn't the smoke go up and back rather than down?

I guess that the deflectors have an impact on airflow, such that the smoke is sent upwards more forcefully and disperse better. Others may know more, but that's my general understanding of their function.

They were installed in order to deflect the smoke from the cab when going through tunnels.

It is an amazing machine! We also went to KC Union Station, good sized crowd there. Shot #3 was from Bonner.....I completely under estimated the speed of that run by! Agree, anxiously awaiting Big Boy!
