Great Blue Heron at Montezuma NWR. Comments Welcome.
I feel like I want to zoom out some, and see more of the whole. At 1/3 second I am guessing you took it with your camera on a tripod. Often I take several shots of the same view, and those in which I zoomed out are, at least for me usually the better and more interesting compositions. Its usually something about the scene that draws us to take its picture. Zooming in discards many of the elements that initially attracted us.
Thanks for the comments. It was actually hand held. I am working to get better at composition.
Frank Cappa, a famous WWII war photograph was quoted as saying "If your pictures aren't good enough, you are not close enough."
Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

You were close enough to get a good shot of the main subject and you did so with a very nice background. The composition is fine. Unfortunately, this particular shot of the heron is not attractive to me. Additionally, the eye is not in focus. Animals, like people, have better and worse poses. A very good attempt at an animal close up. You are headed in the right direction. Work on focus. Take multiple animals shots in order to have a choice whenever possible. Even the slightest movement they make can make a viewing difference.
The eye seems out of focus as does the beak. The bokeh is good. The image is a little flat.
