Even though Linux (a Unix variant) is extremely stable, very few of the most popular applications have been written for it.
BUT, I won't host my or any other website on anything but a Unix machine.

Microsoft is looking at other systems....Whilst the rise in Linux and Mac use is still in small increments Windows is getting bigger and more ungainly.

Most users have a need for fewer Aps rather than a plethora of 'similar Aps' all needing different and additional tweeks to work in Windows. Choice is great - but the MS OS has to respond to everyone's take up. This is predominantly determined by newer hardware needs rather than Software updates. Linux itself has had to respond with 64bit OS and the demise of 32bit support. So quite old hardware is not always usable.

Linux gains support by being 'free commons' rather than pay to use. In a society that constantly adds on 'internet only access' to services and contact, Free to use software has to be supported by Industry and Government... Otherwise only the rich will have access.

As more of our daily life involves PC use in one form or another 'common access' rather than a single OS is a logical conclusion. It may not be patriotic for everyone to use one language....but denying access to everyone is not an option.

Actually Mac OS is the GUI running on top of Unix and I escaped from Windows years ago when I retired from Windows application development work. When I do have to use Windows on a PC I'm always frustrated by its obtuse and clumsy GUI, poor memory management, and sluggish behavior.
