While we’re talking PENTAX, I would like to put in my 2 cents. While vacationing in Vietnam (courtesy of the U.S.tourism department of the military) in 68 &69, I bought one of the first “SLR” cameras ever made in Japan. A Pentax spotmatic. It was marvelous. I had it for over 20 years, but finally sold it to a fellow “SAILING pal”, in the late 90s. After a brief stint with CANON (also a great way to go) I went back to PENTAX. AND I’m lovin’ it... Right now I have quite an array of gear. So much in fact, I find that some of it has been IGNORED. Go to our sales department, cuz I’m listing my K-01 and my K-5 with a vertical grip. A prime example of why I continue to rave about PENTAX, is the fact that the Pentax K-1 full frame , is considerable less money for more camera, than many full frames out there. I love it, and Pentax glasss is as good as many, & better than some/ certainly ubiquitas and Omni-present. Same mount for years. RJM

I purchased a Spotmatic with nifty 50 1.4 at TSN in late ‘67. Still have it, but gave up film in early ‘90s when digital hit the streets. Great camera.

Perhaps. Never used any of them. Never owned a Pentax until about a year ago. I have a K-5 also. Got it pretty reasonable used, after I bought the K-70. Great low light handling. I keep it hooked up to a Pentax 100mm f2.8 macro. That combo makes some very nice images. It may be the best prime lens I have.

I am partial to zooms however. They are just more versatile. Zooming with my feet is not my cup of tea. The K-70, with the 18-135 and the 55-300 is my walk around "kit", & covers pretty much anything I might come across.

There are TWO 55-300s now, Tropics … do you have the old red-ringed noisy one … or the new one?

I just bought a Pentax K-70. One of the big things that caught my attention with Pentax is that they retain a real viewfinder - you know, a real optical, true SLR viewfinder.

ALL DSLRs retain "a real optical true SLR Viewfinder" Woody ….

Where they differ is in two aspects: a) some - like Pentax models - provide 100% of the Optical Image IN the Viewfinder - whereas, many others - may only provide 95% or 98% of that image. The other difference comes from whether the manufacturer used a Penta-PRISM housing, or a Penta-MIRROR housing. The former will provide a much brighter image, than the latter. Cheaper APS-C DSLRs usually provide the latter.

Yes, RE - and it's - supposedly - good up to 819,200 … if you should want to go that high, RE …

And, I just read it also has an electronic shutter, good to 1/24000th …. wow!!! … neat !!!!

But, also - the review I just read, indicated there were problems with continual AF …

Have you experienced such problems, RE?

I don't usually use continual AF, so I can't comment on that.

Tonight my wife noticed an animal outside, so I went out on the deck {sweatshirt but no coat} and took these photos; even using LiveView, I had to hand-focus them. Beyond some point, "insanely high" ISO levels are of limited usefulness

When I purchased my first Pentax SLR in 1979, they were a leading brand. I switched to Canon in 1995 because their EF-mount looked much better than what Pentax was using; I was still a Canon user when we transitioned from the film age to the digital age, but I understand Pentax didn't handle that very gracefully either; apparently Asahi Optical was taken over by Hoya, which then sold Pentax to Ricoh. I had issues with the reliability of Canon Rebels, and ended up switching back to Pentax in 2015 .... and by that time they had become the "do they still exist?" producer.

I bought a Ricoh when I was a college student (a while ago😀). The thing was complete crap. I then bought a Pentax when in law school (at 33). Unfortunately we had a break in and it was taken - no insurance. I thought is was a very good camera. Went with Nikon doe to a sale, and haven’t looked back. Sorry to hear Pentax in decline.

Decline from what? …

Ricoh won't let Pentax fall down on its knees … Mark my word!!!!!
