Whenever my camera is at rest, I always remove the battery for 2 reasons. Turned-off battery grain. This can be minimised by turning Airplane Mode to ON. For older batteries there is always a risk of eletrolyte leakage which turns a camera in to toast.

In one of the WARNING boxes on page 17 of my camera manual it says: ALWAYS CHECK WITH THE HOG!
My manual is older than the UHH, but I just updated it. Thanks!
If I know it will be a month or more before I use the equipment, then the batteries come out. I had an unfortunate incident once that made a strong impression on me.

It's better to remove battery, even if not used for a couple of seeks to be on the safe side.
If God forbid you have a defective battery and it leaks, it will cause lots of damage to your camera.

should I leave the batteries in my cameras when not in use for a few weeks or should I take it out.

I leave them in, in case they catch on fire
at least they are somewhat contained.
.
I hate it when that happens!
My camera is a Nikon DSLR-510O; it uses a button battery, which I have not changed in six years. However, I check about once a month for any sign of deterioration. So far I have had no difficulty with it, but this discussion makes me think I should get a new battery, just to be safe.
