Yes the decline in camera sales is absolutely due to smartphone camera improvements and increasingly widespread use.

Real cameras and smartphone ‘cameras’ will always be with us. While I don’t think perpetually chasing the ‘latest and greatest’ is the most sensible approach, I believe ‘tried and true’ gear is a great choice, not necessarily in the sense of being ‘an investment’ like fine art or jewels, but as a creative tool.
