I’m not talking about the City. About out Younder in the wilds. I’d Never carry a gun in a city to protect my gear! That’s asking for Trouble!

I have traveled in ,perhaps, the most dangerous countryside in the US with many thousands of dollars of medical implant gear. Streets of NY City. And have had cars broken into a c**pla times, but never had any personal difficulties. From Harlem to Red Hook to Sunset Park to East New York, to Far Rockaway, never had a single threat.

Concealed Carry permits required gun education Linda. You don’t run around saying stop or I’ll shoot! This thread is about being far from home all alone in the wild! There are some Hogg’s that will understand what I mean.
So what would be a realistic scenario? Someone stalks you for miles, then jumps out in front of you brandishing a knife and you get to your gun in time to shoot him before he can stab you?

Or he's carrying a gun too, and you shoot each other and bleed to death?

That would be the plan. It’s what self defense means.

Logic-based analysis of realistic scenarios has no part of silly paranoia ...

Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid

Lurking in the shadows with bad intentions for your expensive camera gear, you probably won't get a shot off, round, image, other ...

You step out of line, the man will come and take you away ...

Here in southern Arizona I always carry, always. I never carry open, I believe that is potentially asking for trouble. I don't think I would shoot someone trying to take my money or my camera equipment unless I felt she presented an immediate danger to me or someone with me.

I was taught a very important axiom: Never pull a gun unless you intend to shoot and never shoot unless you intend to k**l. Threating with a gun without fully intending to use it is folly.

Funny Bad guys don’t advertise their intentions really? Didn’t know that.

I tend to not take expensive photo gear into scary criminal infested forests. If you feel you need to carry a firearm to protect your gear, maybe you should find safer destinations. If there are bad guys looking to take your expensive gear, they probably won't be advertising there presence or intensions.

Obviously your not a gun advocate Linda. Your letting your personal bias get in the way! Do you ever backpack in the wilds alone with your gear? If you don’t then you have no idea what I’m talking about Respectfully!

People who backpack are unlikely to be criminals. The only issue I ever had was a slimebag breaking a window to get into my car parked in a trailhead. And that was only one time over thousands of times parking in such areas.

I have heard of people stealing camera gear from cars parked next to a tent in a National Park Campground. CA of course. But never 1/4 mile from trailhead or beyond.

Africa might be another story.

Firstly, my usual disclaimer. Just my perspective, I may be wrong; I often am!

As a fellow human being, I don't understand your question, or responses; are you really that concerned about being robbed at gunpoint in the great outdoors? If you are, why would you consider your death, or your jail time (maybe life imprisonment), as a suitable trade-off to losing your camera gear? If you are considering that a gun will allow you to take the life or seriously injure someone attempting to steal a few thousand dollars of camera equipment, you will need to be able to pay for a very good lawyer.

I'm very comfortable with using my firearms, but I wouldn't even consider carrying a gun with me when I am out tracking and photographing wildlife in North America.

I've enjoyed wildlife photography in 2 continents other than North America, and I'd only consider arming myself in African man-eater territory; with my trusty Merkel 140AE, chambered in .375 H&H. I've invariably found the local human populations in the wild areas are much more civil (if perhaps not definable as "civilized"?) than some of the people I've met in cities.

I think I'd be more likely to bring a musical instrument than a firearm, when operating off the grid in North America: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsC4kf6x_Q0
