Thanks everyone, I am using the wrong camera for the 80-200mm lens, James my buddy put it on his d7000 and it worked fine, I like this lens, I am planning on upgrading my camera body, what should I buy, I like his d7000, but open to suggestions, I know everyone has favorite, but I am new at this and I want to shoot clear, crisp action shots

Friend upgraded to Tamron SP 70-200mm 2.8 g2, I can buy this lens for good price but manual focus only, AF motor needs replacing, should I or should I upgrade to newer lenses, any help would be great

If this lens is the afs-d 80-200 the autofocus motor goes out in them . I was having problems with mine and sent it into Nikon . They had it at two different locations. When I got it back their letter said they did not have the parts available to fix it. Surprisingly it autofocused better than ever. In the meanwhile I bought the new 70-200 e fl vr.
The 80-200 only worked for a month or so then locked up. Only having about 20ft of autofocus. Something broke in the lens blocking how far the focusing elements move. I think something plastic was cracked or broken in the lens.
I had been told there are many plastic parts inside this lens. They may have gotten the motor replaced and broke something plastic in the lens. They do not have any of these part available. They told me so.
There is a shop near Chicago Illinois that will work on this lens. It may be called MIDWEST photo but I’m not 100% positive.
I love this lens so much I was going to use it manual focus if the motor was gone in it .
I was comparing it side by side to my new 70-200 e. The e lens is sharper. The 80-200 locks focus better and without hunting . When the super duper best ever 70-200 struggles and hunts. The 80-200 has a very special character to its image and (I) love the look of the bokeh. The e lens has actual microcontrast to it most high element zoom lenses don’t . And it’s oof areas are beautiful also.
But that 80-200 produces gorgeous images with a special character. Also it has less focus breathing than the e lens . Even though the 80-200 doesn’t focus as close the image is about the same size.
I also found a 80-200 afs-d on eBay for $499 with the original lens shade and leather case. This is cheaper than you can get a new motor put in

Now that you have confirmed that it is the AF 80-200mm F2.8 is it the Push Pull or Two Ring(one ring for zoom, one for focus) I'm more fond of the two ring. I have been researching and over analyzing the purchase for months and I am now hesitating because of the Tamron. I got a great deal on the Tamron 150-600 G2 so am reviewing the one your friend bought. Back to your question. When I finally converted from film to digital I went with the D7000 because I have 4 older AF lenses that are screw drive and the D7XXX D300, D500, D6XX, D7XX and D8XX series and the D90 will operate them. There are many very good screw drive lenses still out there and some can be had at bargin prices. I bought a 300mm F4 ED for $325 last month. The current AFS model is $1,350 and the PF version is $1,997. Is the 20 year old version as good as the current version, NO. But it is better than my 70-300 AF-S and focuses quickly on my D800(bought used at Strarbucks for .50/1.00). that I plan to sell to get the 70-200 or 80-200 F2.8. From your statements, it sounds like you are on the same path I took you want good equipment, cheap. Craig's list is a great place to get bargins, just meet at a busy place, I like Starbucks and test the equipment before paying for it. If you don't like the equipment or person don't do it. Enough lecturing if you want to talk more PM me.
