The 18 -400 is heavy. Much heavier than you current 18-200. You may want to put it on your camera and see how it feels. Not a carry over your shoulder all day lens.

The Tamron weighs only 3.7 oz. more than the Canon...(24.9 vs 21.2)

Many (who have an APS-C camera) are very satisfied with the Tamron 18-400 ($649.00 new). However, if you prefer a lens that is lighter but still gives a wide zoom range you might consider the Sigma 18-300mm ($399 new). I have one and love it. It is sharp enough for me, even at 300mm (see chin whiskers in attached).

Saying you have a Mark II only tells us it is a 2nd generation version of something. I'm guessing it is an APS-C camera, but can't be sure.

Fantastic lens, great walk around lens. Sharp,
though out the entire range.

Just had my Mark II and 18X200 in the shop for a tune up and I said something about maybe Canon has a newer version of that lens. The guy says no but pulled out a brand new Tamron 18X400 that he says is a big seller. That, to me, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good lens. Anybody have first hand experience with this Tamron? Thanks...
By the way, I was almost home (45 miles away) before I thought that I should have asked him if I could rent it for a couple days.

I have that lens on my D7200 and it has become my usual walk around lens.....I love the lens

Last year I purchased aTamron 24-70 f2.8 and the pictures always send soft. Tried the at adjust on my camera and it helped, but not enough. Paid the shipping to send it in and they said there was a servo error. They replaced it under warranty, calibrated it for my camera, returned it and I have been happy with it since. So to sum all of that up, yes, I would still buy a Tamron lens again.

Good lens, not high-end Canon or Nikon, but unless you expect perfection, you won’t be disappointed.

If you title a new post, "Do You Like Your Tamron
18-400mm Lens?" you'll get a lot of replies and
posts of images. I use a Nikon 28-300mm, but
this goes farther in both directions.

I also use the Nikon 28-300 and I strongly
suspect that it, too, is a Tamron product.

Acoarst it doesn't go as short or long as a
Tamron 18-400 ... cuz the 28-300 is for FF
and the 18-400 is for APSC.

I've owned the Tamron 18-400 for a year. It was the only lens I traveled with to the Canadian Maritimes, Acadia NP and Vermont last fall.

I own several prime lens, other telephoto lens, close up lens, wide angle lens and a Tamron 150-600. After doing quite a bit of testing before traveling to the Maritimes the decision to only carry this one lens was an easy one. It is a little heavier than some other telephoto lens, but is a fast focus and allows a great range of in focus shots.

For four weeks, traveling by car, bus and ferry for well over 6,000 miles this lens on a Nikon D500 did everything I asked. When traveling that much fooling with changing lens, etc is not a good option. I counted on this lens a great deal. This was the first time traveling with only one lens.

I am not a pro photographer in any sense of the word, but having the quality, range and comparatively light weight for a lens of this range all I had to do was concentrate on composition, lighting and story telling of our trip. No lens juggling and missing shots I would have liked to have had. With this lens I got the shots I wanted.
This lens has relegated almost all my other lens to the bench, on a day to day basis, except for those special occasions. If in doubt do rent one and put it through it's paces. You won't be disappointed.

I have a Tamron 18-400 on a D5300. This has been my go to travel lens. Alaska, Africa, Spain and to Iceland this year. I like the flexibility. Hope this helps you out.

I have had the Tamron for 6 months now. Own a newspaper here in NH. I like it for versatility but for indoor use it is a little tough to get a great shot. Outdoors and for "around town" images it is great to have only one body and one lens vs 1 body several lens or 2 bodies with different lenses. The attached photo's were shot Sunday, weather was 30 degrees and varied from overcast to sunny. They were also shot on a boat going upriver so it was a might bumpy. All shots are JPG (I have the RAW shots) with no touch-ups.
It is easy to carry all day, semi-waterproof and has a nice 6 year warranty.
If you like PM me for more.

Mike
