I currently have a Nikon D500 and have two lenses - the Tamron 16-300 and the Tamron 150-600 G1. I am researching a wide angle lens to add to my collection for landscape shots and an everyday lens. I am an outdoor person, so my shots are more landscape and wildlife type shots. I am a novice and don't really understand all the various abbreviations and what they all mean on lenses ....so any help understanding would be wonderful.

I searched thru the archives on here but most of what I found was older posts from 2012, 2013 and so on. So I am looking for some recommendations on what is available now.

My budget will be up to $600...so -- Which lens do you have for landscape shots and what would you recommend me looking into?

Thanks
Cindy

If Tamrons are working for you, you should seriously consider the Tamron 10-24mm VC ultrawide zoom lens. Its a great performer and works wonderfully on the D500.

I have a D7200 and was looking for a wide angle zoom. I ended up with a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5. Adorama.com has them new for $400 after the price was dropped $200 last summer. The body extends beyond the aspherical front lens enough to handle an 82mm filter. Very nice glass, reasonably fast at a flat f3.5 over the zoom range, very sharp. Yes, there is some barrel distortion, which is easily corrected in LR. I have used it for landscapes and indoor shots and am very pleased with the results. Since I bought it, I picked up a D500. Works great on the D500 as well. Just make sure you order it for Nikon. You might be able to find a used one (look for demo, E+, or E) and save yourself about 20%. If you are not sure, rent one for a week to check it out.

CindyHouk that's an easy fix... look at the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X... it rocks!
get the old one without the internal focus motor... it's lighter and optically superior...

Here's Ken's thoughts on this wide angle
https://kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm

I have this lens and totally love it... nothing comes close to it in cost/value ratio

Thom Hogan highly recommends it also... it's in his DX kit...

The price on the older model is half your budget... look to KEH; or B&H used department...
since it's a screwdriver focus there is nothing to go wrong..

All the best on your journey Cindy

btw, the examples below I believe were shot wide open (hand held)

It seems like the lenses you have now cover what you want to shoot. The 150-600mm covers you for wildlife shots. The 16-300mm has you covered for landscape and everyday shots.

The drawback about ultra wide angle lenses for landscapes is that they exaggerate distance. Mountains can look like small hills way off in the distance.

You might want to add a large aperture prime lens for low light shots. It's also a great addition for portrait shots as the large max aperture helps to obtain a shallow depth of field. Tamron's new SP prime lenses all have vibration compensation which is a big plus. I have the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 that I was using on a D500. I'm now using it on my D750.

This is just my take on it. I know it doesn't address exactly what you were asking about. It just seemed your lenses have you covered for what you want to shoot.

Look for a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 on Ebay.

Thanks

You may want to check out Nikon's AF-P 10-20mm. The last time I priced it, it was $307. The D500 DSLR is updated to accommodate this lens. It is crop sensor designation only. Not for full frame cameras. But. It will give you a FOV of 15-30mm. This is a plastic lens. But durable.

Here you go. And I saved you $300.00 from the top end of your budget. This lens has proven to be another winner from Nikon.

It's manual focusing but don't forget to "look into" the Irix 15mm f:2.4. A great lens for under $500 dollars (US).

Cindy, your 16-300mm lens when set to 16mm and used with your D500 will give you an equivalent view of a 24mm lens used with a full frame camera. For many photographers that is wide enough although it is not for others due to their wide angle needs.
You should try during a shoot of your favorites subjects your 16-300 set to 16mm and do not move it from there. Move around your subject, get close and at the end of the day examine the images and determine if 16mm fulfilled your needs as a wide angle.

A wide angle lens require some experience to use it and all of them distort one way or the other, especially in the corners. Coming close to the subjects offers a better perspective since wide angles tend to expand the foreground. The wider the lens the more pronounced the perspective.
Nikon has a very good and reasonably priced 10-20 and B&H has a refurb one for only $250. If you want a fixed aperture there are many primes in addition to the excellent Tokina 11-16 f2.8 that was recommended to you. I use the Nikon 12-24 f4 AF-S because 12mm with a crop sensor is all I need.

If you want the wide angle to get everything in a landscape shot you could be very disappointed.
